In what's seen as rare and unusual order, CBS said Hoffman gave
VP's attorneys what they wanted in approving subpoenas on leaks.
CBS said there was "no sign of urgency" w/grandjury "in contrast"
to VP's attys "who were very busy indeed¹ in their challenge to stop
whole proceeding.
ABC also said VP's attys
they
got what they wanted --
power
to take sworn depositions "fromanyone they wanted" including
Justice Dept -- in effort to track down leaks. But Donaldson concluded
"despite" victory of VP's attys, the "dangers actually increased, as
jury began to hear more evidence against VP, as it reportedly will
Thurs. also. Similarly NBC's Nessen noted more testimony against
VP 12 hours SO far.
Schackne on CBS AM said info on case comes from lawyers, clients
and pols, not from Beall's office which is locked and neither Beall nor
staff will take calls, issue comments nor talk at all. Problem for
reporters is that there are very few hard facts to report. Reporters
don't know if prosecutors were justified in calling GJ in 1st place.
Schackne added reporters can't write basic story because no one
really knows it. Thus it's impossible to make any kind of judgement.
Brinkley criticized critics of pre-trial publicity, stating they do so
if all the facts were known. In fact, he said, "very little is known¹¹
about how grand juries are affected by news reports, if indeed they're
affected at all. Juries are supposed to be swayed only by what is heard
in courtroom and, as far as is known, they do. If they didn't, presumably
no famous person in nation could
get fair trial.
Thomson said VP's "prepared to fight it out alone. He isn't waiting
for support from any quarter.
11
Spokesman said VP's disgruntled
about WH-Justice responses to leaks.
Evans Novak are convinced VP will stay on "no matter what happens
in courts¹ and, in their newsletter, they "wonder how WH, w/all its
sources, couldn've been so misled as to believe VP could be frightened
into resigning because it suited pleasure of RN and Justice. Having
made that erroneous judgement, however, RN now finds self in following
series of dilemmas, 11 say E-N: "#1 successor, JBC is receiving more
brickbats than we'd have ever imagined possible at this early stage
of '76 race. 11 E-N say "perhaps even more puzzling for [WH] is they
can't 'play' Agnew affair w/any consistency or assurance of success.
The whole RN stance was to operate in such a way as to force VP out,
but VP frustrated that. 1 immediate result has been built-up of pro-
