The major stories of the day:
Sadat's prepared to agree to C-F if Israelis get out of occupied
lands. He warned Israel that Egypt possesses Zepher missile
which can hit Israeli cities. Led all nets along w/his willingness
to open Suez at any moment.
Also in her 1st public speech
since war began, Meir said Israelis have crossed Canaland are
operating on Egyptian side. No estimate of number of Israelis
involved. As for Egyptian call for Israelis to get out of the land
taken in '67, she termed it "ridiculous" and "laughable. 11 CBS
said she apparently wasn't intimidated by Egyptian missile threat.
NBC called her speech "tough. 11
CBS described Sadat as
sounding "triumphant. 11
US says 30 jets have airlifted 500 tons of arms to Israel on 1st
2 days of US resupply effort. That's only 10% of what Soviets
have sent, noted all nets.
ABC/CBS film as Marines in full
battle gear boarded the Iwo Jima and the vessel sailed for the Med.
CBS noted the 2000 troops included a specially trained Marine
landing unit and that there'd been all-out effort to load it in record
time. CBS AM said Norfolk "security was tighter than it's been
since WWII" when an Israeli cargo ship was loaded. ABC film
Import of US aid as both military and psychological boost to
Israel emphasized by ABC/CBS.
Reasoner commentary on
"scary" nature of budding confrontation. He concluded: "You
see kiddies, there was a cold war and never settled; it could be a
very, very short generation of peace. 11
Rumors of "decisive, 11 possibly "climactic" battle in Sinai noted
by all nets.
Israelis seen as still stalled in Syria. Film on
all nets and ABC/CBS had film of Israeli POWs being well-treated
in Damascus.

UPI says
session "may be one of the most critical in the tense crisis. 11
Meanwhile, the six largest oil producing countries on the Persian
Gulf announced a 17% increase in crude oil prices, but said move
had nothing to do w/the war. Increase not expected to effect US
right away. Most direct immediate effect likely on Europe and Japan.
