THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN SPECIAL REPORT: NEWS CONFERENCE OF OCT. 26, 1973 WIRE LEADS "RN relaxed worldwide alert of 2. 3M US servicemen and nuclear bombers and declared 1 outlook for permanent peace in M-E is best in 20 years'. 11 (UPI) "RN said US and USSR have moved from their greatest crisis in a decade to a great step forward toward real peace in Mideast. 11 (AP) "RN chided European countries that hadn't been cooperative in arranging C-F by saying they'd been frozen to death' if a prolonged conflict had resulted in a cutoff of Arab oil. 11 (UPI) "RN said he'll have a new W'gate Prosecutor appointed next week, but served notice that all Pres. documents would be kept secret and foresaw no chance of being sued for them in Federal court. " (UPI which calls conf. e-swinging.") "RN promised that next W'gate special prosecutor will have independence and total cooperation from Exec. It was a pledge Cox also had -- but not directly from RN. " (AP) "RN says he'll permit the appointment of a new special prosecutor next week, but one who'll be under the same restraints as Cox. 11 (AP) "RN's decision to name a new special prosecutor, who'd be subject to dismissal as was Cox, has put him on a collision course w/Hill. " (UPI) "A new burst of Dem criticism greeted RN's latest attempt to quell W¹ gate. 11 (AP which says many MCs gave RN credit for M-E but said he failed to quiet suspicions about his willingness to permit complete, independent investigation. Others complained of a new RN attack on media.) "RN renewed his long-running battle w/media, claiming he was target for 'outrageous, vicious, distorted reporting'. 11 (UPI which notes that while RN criticized media, many aides in East Room "laughed uproariously" at RN's sallies -- Not noticeable on TV.)
