House Commerce voted to cr eate FEA but w/condition its head be
confirmed. Vote ri. on FEA and Emerg. Energy Bill.
OTHER ENERGY (TV)
Rather noted Simon doesn't believe oil industry is getting unconscion -
ably large profits; in fact he and RN believe if properly invested, those
profits will be key to alleviating shortage
CBS noted plan to call on
250 energy execs to help run energy task force has run into legal snags
as Justice raised conflict of interest and antitrust questions
One key
problem for FEA, said Cronkite, will be determining severity of shortage
as USG has no ind't knowledge of the relevant stix and it relies totally
on industry, a situation Jackson regards as a "disaster, 11 a sentiment he
elaborated on film about. But Atlantic Richfield's Anderson on film said
DC gets all the facts it needs; it just assumes they're suspect. However,
said reporter Kraus, some companies won't even give out all their
stix, eg Calif. where 5 firms are suing state legisl. which has
subpoenaed info. State legislator on film saying Exxon doesn't want us
to know, in contrast to their ad and he also rapped Mobil and Union.
Next on CBS, an FPC staffer charged industry w/providing inaccurate
stix on nat'l gas reserves. And then came Phil Hart blaming profit
motive, saying companies show less reserves than they really have in
order to advo cate end to price controls.
CBS noted USPS to get 11% less fuel than it wanted for Dec; likely to
mean sl ower delivery of Xmas mail.
ABC/CBS film from Poconos where 1000 cars -- 10 miles in either
direction -- were blocked 4 hrs by 100 truckers taking action on their
own. They contend 55 mph limit costs them money and the diesel
shortage is causing them many extra hours due to tripling in number of
stops they re having to make. We'll get what we want, said a trucker
on ABC, or US won't get what it wants. A trucker on CBS said blockcade
was done for benefit of the nation to awaken it to truckers' needs.
Editor of trucker mag Overdrive on NBC which noted Fitzsimmons
called the publication a phony" said truckers were tired, sick, dis-
gusted and frustrated" at inability to make voices heard in DC. Both
ABC/NBC noted they're having to stop every 100 miles for fuel due to
federal allocation program which they re upset about. They don't
make money searching around for stations, said NBC.
