Carter of NY News leads: "Meir and Sadat both thanked HAK
and, thru him, RN for helping them reach an agreement they both
wanted but couldn't reach on their own. [Meir] was more openly
emotional, but [Sadat] was also effusive. 11 Asserting it's now up to
Arabs-Israelis to "capitalize on the diplomatic victories both have
achieved, 11 Inquirer also suggests "no one will cavil at extending
congratulations to RN himself" re: his role. "For if RN must take
the responsibility when things go wrong in his Admin, he's surely
entitled to praise when things go right. 11
Knight's McCartney suggests M-E agreement is "perhaps the most
hopeful sign to date that sanity, rather than blind hatred, may yet
prevail in that tinderbox of the world. 11 He asserts "Israelis made
the key concessions, 11 and Egyptian army presence on east bank of
Suez is a "victory psychologically impt to the Arab world. 11 But
"there's much left to be done, 11 and tho "the astonishing HAK seems

of the agreement prevail and notes "any disposition of this confrontation
is better than none. " But, it warns, "cessation of hostilities is no more
stable than that achieved in Korea or VN, where an end to active fighting

agreement would mean his 5-year-old son would never have to fight
the Egyptians. A buddy advised him not to count on that. A 3rd Israeli
soldier said, 'if there's a next time, it'll probably lead to WWIII. 111
Sun notes "agreement doesn't fulfill any unrealistic US hopes of
a political settlement this winter. 11 And given 25 years of "unremitting
hostility, it wouldn't be unreasonable for belligerents to use the entire
period to test each other's good intentions.

While "past postures would favor rejection, 11 logic of its joining
