The major stories of the day:
Dissection of news conf. seemed to be order of the day.
Less than 24 hours after RN's guarded optimism on economy,
led NBC, Burns said inflation couldn't be halted this year.
Chancellor followed by note of food price increase (also on
ABC) and then had film of bakers claiming US may not have
any bread in late spring, even at $1/loaf. The Fed chief's
differing w/RN was noted in #2 CBS story.
RN made some
waves that went on rippling, above all his suggestion that
fuel crisis has passed, led ABC. Similarly CBS led by saying
RN had stirred up controversy on Hill by saying "crisis has
passed. 11 Both nets w/RN clip from news conf. followed by
Simon on film pointing out to Jackson that RN's optimism was
re: end to gas lines and RN recognizes problem of shortage
will continue.
NBC's Levine noted energy officials fear
RN's words will lead to less gas conservation.
All nets
also noted Mansfield and Petrol execs who advise Interior
disagreed w/RN's optimism on chances for avoiding rationing.
WH apologized for RN citing Weisner as one of those who claimed
deductions for papers. Noted by all nets w/CBS saying WH
blamed press for story as Scripps-Howard had listed Weisner
last Dec.
Unusual public pressure put on VA's Johnson by RN, noted NBC
whichhad film as did ABC of RN saying attention should be given
to any indication that benefit laws aren't being carried out.
Johnson followed by saying in any program of such vast proportions
that all checks wouldn't make it on time. ABC w/clips of AU
students who continue to be victims of VA red tape and burocracy.
And NBC's Nessen said Johnson's admission of VA errors
confirmed vets are victims of red tape, complicated forms and regs.
RN raised some eyebrows, said ABC, w/his remark that Jaworski's
request was a "matter of record. " In fact, said ABC's Schoumacher
keeping true to Tuesday nite's refutation, contradiction or other-
wise muddying of almost every major remark made by RN, it wasn't
