The major stories of the day:
LA cty prosecutors agreed to drop state charges against JDE,
Liddy and Young so they won't conflict w/fedl prosecution of
the case. Led ABC; #2 on CBS and #4 on NBC. Calif. perjury
charge against JDE won't be dropped, however. In only net w/
film, LA DA Busch on CBS said case is one of nat'l import and
those charged shouldn't be tried twice on essentially the same
charges.
Dismissal of charges leaves Young w/out any
indictments pending, noted CBS. Graham said the leader of
plumbers has immunity and will probably be a prosecution
witness, never to be tried himself.
WH has reportedly refused to give Judiciary 43 tapes, not 6
as previously reported. Brief NBC/CBS note while ABC had
film as it was learned "six events' are what Comm is after
w/focus of tapes desired the period before and after 3/21.
ABC's Donaldson noted RN claims he knows what he meant and
what he did. Comm. wants to hear what he did.
Rodino canceled
impchmnt meeting scheduled for Tues. Although he said it'd not
been intent to hold meeting, some members were caught by surprise.
One member believes Rodino canceled impchmnt session in order to
avoid another attempt to subpoena the tapes.
Vesco's threat to Don Nixon that he'd disclose secret donation if
SEC wasn't headed off was #2 on NBC, #3 CBS and briefly noted
in #4 spot by ABC.
UPI leads on story covered w/film on all nets: ''RN gave his
wife Pat an affectionate sendoff on her diplomatic mission to
Venezuela and Brazil and told a crowd of several hundred that
she'd be carrying best wishes to 'our closest neighbors and our
closest friends. 111 #3 ABC story; #5 on NBC and #7 on CBS --
only net w/out sound film. RN "boasted, 11 said ABC, and pointed
out as he likes to do, said NBC, that PN is most traveled 1st
Lady in US history. RN/PN handshaking and crowd w/signs like
"Vaya Con Dios" and "Have a good trip" shown on good clips on
all shows.
NBC noted RN to Chic. Fri. w/WH desire to show
