HRH, JDE and Mardian dropped as defendants in $26M civil
damage suit filed by Socialist Workers Party alleging harassment.
RN, JNM and Dean remain as defendants in the NY suit.
If Jt. tax Comm. approves staff report at Wed. meeting, it'll
be released that day, said Long. But Mills says he'll "not be
bamboozled into hurried action" and he "wants some time to know
what I'm doing. 11 RN tax lawyers expected to have chance to argue
against any adverse findings.
IMPEACHMENT
Mills said his "great worry¹ is House will impeach RN but
the move will win only a Sen. majority -- instead of the 2/3's needed.
He asked how, under those circumstances could RN exercise
"the type of leadership that a Pres. must exercise? This I think
would be a terrible, traumatic experience thru which we'd go. 11
Mills said based on his talks w/MC's from all geographical areas,
"There's no doubt in my mind that there are enough votes really--
and I can't prove it--for the Articles of Impchmt in the House. 11
Dick Hayes, founder of a group called the Nat'l Law School
Coalition from U. of Miami Law School said ACLU should lose its
tax-exempt status because of its ads endorsing RN's impchmt.
Hayes said "They accuse RN of playing w/the tax laws, but they
are in overt violation of them" who added his org. has about 15
members.
CBS closed w/report on anti-RN campaigner James Lemon,
a DC area mailman who voted twice for RN but is now fed up and
deserting the silent majority. Believing RN's law-and-order
rhetoric he's waited for RN to settle W'gate in law-and-order
fashion. Instead RN's kept hiding behind mandates, kidding
himself he has any mandate left. Lemon placed Star ad asking
RN what's "law-and-order" about secretly taping conversations,
w/holding tapes in the name of nat'l security, missing tapes? Why
does he pay more taxes than RN? His ad brought unsolicited
contributions which have since paid for a similar Times ad. What
drove Lemon to act was RN's Lincoln Memorial Speech because
in Lemon's view Abe wouldn't have handled W'gate like RN. As
for future ads, Lemon suggests that perhaps events will make
any more unnecessary.
