Ariz Republic says now that it's open season on RN the rule
apparently is: "any stick to beat him down w/. 11 Judiciary's
asked WH for documents re: "sold" ambassadorships. Noting
RN's guilty of awarding them to campaign contributors, it
asks, "why doesn't comm grow up?" That practice goes back as far
as anyone can remember. And there are good reasons for it:
1) only the very wealthy can afford ambassadorships as Hill's
niggardly about diplomatic expense accounts; 2) many persons of
wealth are wealthy because they're men of great ability. As for
Ruth Farkas, edit notes Perle Mesta didn't have any diplomatic
experience either, yet she did a lst-rate job representing US.
Asbury Park Press says fairness requires premature effort
to have TV coverage of Hill debates on impchmnt be rejected at
this time. If move's successful, Senate would be ablaze w/ TV
lights w/ a Pres in the dock, "an atmosphere that wouldn't be
allowed in the lowest NJ trial court. 11 Judiciary hasn't voted
impchmnt resolution, yet TV debate implies that all this is
inevitable. Advocates of the change should remember that "their
zeal to change the rules now prejudges RN and supports his
complaints about unfair treatment on the tube."
