Tho not noted by nets, UPI reported before shows were over
that Burch said RN is prepared to submit all his atty deems relevant.
"I frankly am surprised there's apparently SO much consternation. 11
Burch rejected suggestion WH had been stalling, saying the issue
"has been very, very time consuming. 11
UPI also notes Clawson
said: "If there's been any foot-dragging, it's not by WH. 11
Scott said time required to listen to tapes would delay any Comm
action. They average 8 hours in length, and it'd require 336 hours
to go thru those requested. He noted it took 1 person a full day to
decipher only 6 minutes of 1 tape.
Mansfield and Scott cautioned against polling Senate to see
what it'd do if RN is impeached. Neither mentioned possible trial,
referring only to a "certain extraordinary event. 11 Scott said it
was "request of leadership" that sens. refuse to participate in any
poll. "This isn't a ball game or circus, or contest on which bets
should be wagered. 11
Senator Biden (D-Del) asked that RN be treated fairly and
assumed innocent til proven guilty "beyond a reasonable doubt. 11
Biden also says since there's been no incriminating evidence,
he'd have to vote innocent, if issue were now before Senate.
OTHER W'GATE RELATED
Passman (D-La) said he relayed to WH an offer by business-
men to pay RN $ 1M for his VP papers w/ a plan to publish them.
He'd not identify the men. But, in addition to the group, ex-
La. Gov Noe sought to join in w/$100, 000. Passman said:
"RN was deprived on a technicality of benefits some of his
predecessors had. 11
Accountant "super-sleuth" Bellino is working on the Kalmbach
charges re: Rebozo giving some of the Hughes $100, 000 to RMW and
Don Nixon, said NBC which noted denial by "poor working girl" RMW's
atty. Reporter Stern said it's suspected the Hughes money never
was intended for campaign, but for loans to RN family and friends.
Hughes made a commitment of $100, 000 to RN's/campaign 68 but
there were difficulties in "mechanics" of delivery, Maheu testified.
Rebozo got "cold feet" and didn't want to be involved in receiving
the money, said Maheu
Formerly secret testimony quotes Maheu
as telling Ervin Comm that he and Laxalt planned to deliver 1st of
contributions directly to RN, but Finch apparently blocked plan. Testi-
mony also details $100, 000 contrib. to HHH and $25, 000 to RFK pur-
portedly via Salinger.
