14 5, 000 at Saginaw airport, said NBC's Vito and RN acted like a campaigner in the most vital test yet of his popularity. In lengthy off-the-cuff speech there was no W'gate mention. Clip of RN linking import of coal production to jobs in auto plants. Then it was to the people, said NBC over clip of RN handshaking. Shortest report and no film on motorcade. ABC opened w/ band music as Jarriel noted GOP paid the bill for placards and banners, etc. Most were friendly, but plenty of signs of W'gate problems including pro-impch placards and Sparling standing back from RN and playing 2nd fiddle. Applause for Sparling when RN called for an MC to fight the bottleneck on Hill. ABC then w/film thru the rich farm lands and large crowds w/note of Sparling trailing and 1 poll showing 40% want RN out. Seeking to whip up enthusiasm in rural areas, Jarriel said RN stressed conservative issues in pushing for the ex- WH aide turned candidate. In straight report w/positive film, Rather noted WH gambled in accepting Sparling's unusual invite. RN shown deplaning w/ greeting by Millikin, Griffin, his ex-WH aide, pom-pom girls, band, enthusiastic supporters and a contingent who feel RN could most help US by stepping down. On film, RN said we need MCs who'll vote for jobs and Sparling is the man. Then to another town on "textbook motorcade" w/RN clip as he called for boosting energy supply if prices are to come down and noting 17 WH measures stalled on Hill. RN said Sparling, like Harvey, will push such legisl. Rather said RN hopes to prove he's not a liability but an asset to GOP. And WH feeling is if GOP voters turn out Tues, Sparling can win. Similarly, Jarriel said RN hopes to show he can still help GOPs get elected if they re not afraid to call on him. Trip was test of whether W'gate has eroded RN's coattails. Tues will tell, said ABC. Griffin feels trip will boost GOP turnout and help Sparling. AP notes both Dems and GOPs expect visit to help spur their forces. But RN himself could be the biggest winner w/impchmnt pressure among House GOPs expected to ease if Sparling wins.
