Star's Germond leads: "RN's used a sunny day in Mich. to
demonstrate that, whatever his standing in polls, he still has support
among hard-core GOPs. " RN "evoked consistently favorable response"
and seemed "subdued but relaxed. 11 Germond notes many along the
way expressed only a sense of curiosity in seeing RN as no Pres had
ever visited 'Thumb' before. But it was obvious the small communi-
ties were impressed by the visit. Germond notes Sparling got

cool¹¹ to visit, "reasoning RN's sinking popularity might rub off on
Sparling, 11 most were on hand for airport arrival. They didn't mention,
tho, "RN's own stake in the visit. RN, fighting for his political life,
put his prestige on the line in an effort to elect Sparling. 11
Mich GOP chrmn McLaughlin called the trip "a wonderful boost¹
for Sparling.
Knight report in lead says RN's visit was to promote Sparling's
candidacy and "build a GOP turnout he hopes will show US there's no
RN taint on GOP candidates. If As motorcade progressed, "even some
GOP skeptics who'd opposed visit began to decide [it] might have been
a good idea after all. "
Greene of NY News suggests "personal pres meddling w/ Hill
elections has rarely been as effective as the ego of a Pres would lead
him to believe. 11 But if RN's Mich trip "does nothing more than help
stir up a large turnout of GOP votes, he has a chance of substantial
gain in his battle against impchment, far more than merely the reten-
tion of 1 GOP seat.
He could get credit for pulling the party out of
its W'gate slump. 11 While GOPs would welcome a victory and "no one
would begrudge RN any Brownie points he might earn, or claim, "
