UPI leads: "EMK brought campaigning US-style to Soviet
Georgia, pressing the flesh as he toured thru cheering and
applauding crowds. 11 Said 1 woman bystander, "How beautiful
he is. of UPI compared him to the Pied Piper as he led crowd
thru 1/city's central markets. NBC noted Georgia visit, saying
EMK was received more like a USSR hero. Silent film of EMK-
Brezhnev meeting.
AP notes EMK's reception contrasted sharply w/Moscow,
where few recognized him. As 1 Georgian said, "We love the
Kennedys - him and his brothers. We've read books about them
and seen their pictures. 11
AP notes the presence of top
Brezhnev adviser Alexandrov was seen as indication of the
exceptional import Russ are giving his visit.
Don Kendall said US can lose out in Eastern Europe markets
unless strong Ex-Im Bank financing's available.
Western nations at CESC remain firm in demands that
Moscow make concessions on permitting more human freedom as
part of overall agreement. Some Western reps said USSR still
faces a choice of granting greater such freedom in return for
political concessions or seeing CESC collapse. Expressing senti-
ment echoed by Canada and Scandinavian reps, GB delegates said,
"But we've yet to see whether we in the West will stand firm in
this position. 11
Brezhnev said USSR's "utterly unfit soil" for dissidents in
literature and art.
Solz has expressed a keen interest in visiting
US, said Helms (R-NC), who recently sent an aide to talk to him.
He offered Solz use of a villa in NC "to relax, write or do anything
he pleases. 11 Helms said Solz seemed pleased w/offer, but couldn't
come now because it'd take time away from writing. But Helms
said he left clear impression he might consider trip in future.
UPI's London sources said USSR is facing loss of its impt
exclusive naval facilities in Egyptian ports. Cairo is preparing
a new settlement to end system under which Soviets would be granted
