Riesel says RN wanted to prove thru Mich. trip that he didn't
need to go south for friendly audiences and that he wasn't "holing up"
at WH. RN's bitter over silent treatment given him by hardhats, ie.
,
their boycotting him during their Nat'l Legislative Conf, after he's
virtually turned over Labor Dept to them. The delegates "laughed
derisively" at Meany references to RN's posing w/ yo-yo and "howled
at references to RN's economic policies. 11 Cheered too were a long
line of Dems mocking RN. RN's also irked at ingratitude over appt.
of Brennan, says Riesel who also notes 2 RN counsellors (Rodgers and
Usery) and 4 ass't Labor Sec'ys "right from labor's own exec suites. "
And 6 of the 10 powerful Labor Dep't regional directors are from the
"movement. 11 Labor "couldn't ask for more. And it's more than it
got from any other Pres. Yet every labor leader save seafarers' Hall
has followed Meany's lead. As for Brennan, he says "subdued anger "
that he hasn't changed, that he's no different from day he was appointed.
But he'll not respond to Meany's abuse "because only sufferer will be

W / film report CBS AM's Jones reported VP says he doesn't
think of becoming Pres, because he's too occupied w/ being VP. Yet
he's had to see in his travels that people are more interested in seeing
him than in hearing him defend RN. There are no thunderous ovations
when VP talks of RN, said Jones, as VP on film and to applause said
he believes RN's finest Pres. re: foreign affairs of any Pres in VP's
lifetime. While VP says he's done nothing to undercut RN, continued
Jones, some in WH disapprove of his operation. His travels and
warm receptions are "sore points' for some RN aides. But a VP
aide protests that WH thinks VP should be available to RN 100% of
the time, while VP's job is to assist and defend his office. WH's
mission is to attack its enemies, but that's not our style, VP aide
was also quoted as saying.
Jones also noted Osborne article upset some Cabinet members
and VP was embarrassed re: statement on RN small talk, the im-
plication of which was "RN's a ''lonely' man. Noting VP's politically
prudent, using small motorcades and no black limos, Jones also said
