June 7, 1974
(Thurs. nets, wires)
The Major Stories of the Day:
-
ABC's HK Smith led "Are there any hard, solid grounds for
believing RN conspired in W'gate cover-up?" That's the main
question before Judiciary. WH disclosed and confirmed the
W'gate GJ who's considered evidence w/care reached that
conclusion that such grounds exist. All nets led w/WH confirma-
tion of LA Times report that G-J voted unanimously to name RN
as unindicted co-conspirator in cover-up. Each net played it
slightly differently, ABC focusing on reaction of Judiciary MCs,
NBC w/ Kurland on film noting (as did other nets) that revelation
could prove fatal to RN's claim of privilege before Supreme Court,
and CBS reporting on the 3 areas in which G-J saw RN linked to
coverup: hush money payments, clemency discussions, and the
CIA connection. On NBC/CBS JSC asserted RN's not a
co-conspirator just because G-J named him; many times people
accused by G-J are found innocent "as will be the case as far as
RN's concerned!' RN asked Sirica to allow publication of the names
of those listed by G-J as unindicted co-conspirators. All nets noted
w/CBS reporting Sirica will hold open hearing on the matter Fri.

"This is a press conference, not a cross-examination"" was HAK's
retort on all nets to persistent Mollenhoff questioning whether he'd
recommended taps for nat'l security reasons in '69. HAK denied
making "direct recommendation" re: taps as he stuck by Foreign
Relations testimony that he'd only supplied list of names of those
w/access to materials being leaked. On CBS film, (NBC noted)
HAK, when asked if he'd hired lawyer re: possible perjury charges
growing out of Foreign Relations testimony, replied "angrily" (NBC)
that he had not, adding on CBS that he didn't conduct his office as if
he were in a conspiracy
On CBS Eilberg (D-Pa.) said HAK
"initiated" some taps and received copies of virtually all tap
reports but was quoted as saying HAK didn't personally figure
