MEMORANDUM THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON October 6, 1969 MEMORANDUM FOR: THE PRESIDENT'S FILE Subject: Short Meeting in the President's Office with Secret Service Officials -- Director James Rowley, Rufus Youngblood, Bob Taylor, Pat Boggs, and Bob New- brand -- and Assistant Secretary of the Treasury (for Enforcement and Operations) Eugene Rossides (10:50-11:00) Assistant Secretary Rossides, Jim Rowley and the others entered the Oval office via the center door and after greeting the President, gathered around him near his desk for photographs by the press. During the picture-taking session, and in accordance with custom, Director Rowley, who was standing on the President's left, presented the President with a gold Secret Service badge inscribed with the date of the occasion. Additionally, Chief Rowley presented the President with a trophy (about 8"-9" high with a 12"-14" base) which bore a large gold medallion commemorating the 100th anniversary of the U.S. Secret Service (July 5, 1965). The President appeared to be in good spirits and accepted the badge and trophy most cordially. He then asked Jim Rowley if the badge could be mounted in a fashion similar to that of the medallion and Jim assured him that it could. With that the President handed the badge to Jim and commented about the 1-1-1 record of the Redskins. Several minutes of light conversation followed -- all pertinent to pro- football and Sonny Jurgenson. Eugene Rossides made the point that Jurgenson was considered by many of the experts superior in ability to both Unitas and Bart Starr. A moment later the group left the Oval office and the President returned to his desk. ALEXANDER P. BUTTERFIELD
