GOVERNORSHIPS
Q.
Mr. President: You don't think that the loss of key
Governorships, in Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, and
Wisconsin portend trouble for 1972 ?
A.
Well, we regret those losses of course; and
I will not comment on 1972. However, the importance of an
incumbent Governor to a Presidential candidate is one
of the great political myths. In 1960, there were Republican
Governors in Illinois and New York -- and Senator John Kennedy
carried both states; whereas there were Democratic Governors
in Ohio and California - - and we carried those states. Presidents
and Presidential candidates pull in Governors on their
coattails -- not the other way around.
