THE SST
Q.
Mr. President: Can you tell us what you think the chances
are of saving the SST ?
A.
I would think they are good. I would hope they
are good. Basically, the SST was defeated for two reasons,
I believe. Its opponents felt that it was not at the top of the
list of national priorities; they felt it a danger to our already
over-endangered environment. To those Americans who believe
this way, I would say this.
We are concerned about the American environment;
and we will not allow its destruction or damage -- if that would
be the case. We are deeply concerned about America's
priorities -- that is why those priorities have been shifting
away from military resources, to human resources, away
from war in Asia and toward building peace in the United States - -
as long as I have been in office.
But SSTs are going to be built, and flown and
Bean in asia
bought. The question that it is coming down to now is whether
they will be American planes, earning foreign capital for
American businessmen, creating jobs for tens of thousands
of American workers. Or whether those jobs and that income
will go to Britain, or France or the Soviet Union, rather than
the United States.
