Q.
Mr. President: Are you supporting Senators Scott and
Griffin for re-election to their leadership posts ?
A.
We are on thin ice here. Let me say that in my
view both men have done a fine job, and given the New
Senate in 1971, will do even a better job if re-elected.
But I am maintaining my "hands-off" policy.
As far as that decision goes, it is their decision, the
Republican members.
As a longtime resident of Capitol Hill, I can
tell you that there is no organization on earth more
jealous of its right of "self-determination" than a
legislative chamber choosing its leaders. At such
delicate times even the President of the United States
is considered an "outside agitator. 11
