MIDDLE EAST
Arab-Israeli Settlement
Q.
Sir: In view of Secretary Rogers' recent trip to the Middle
East, how do you now view the prospects for peace in the
area?
A.
Based on Secretary Rogers' first-hand impressions,
we are cautiously optimistic that further progress toward
an Arab-Israeli peace settlement is possible.
We continue to be in close tough with the parties directly
involved, to encourage positions which will permit them to
proceed with serious negotiation. These positions could
relate to particular elements in the settlement -- such as
opening the Suez Canal -- or to more general issues.
The ceasefire is now in its tenth month. Both sides
have a genuine interest in maintaining it; on moving toward
settlement.
