COLOR-BACKGROUND
1. RN probably aware of this, but Detroit Symphony opens at Ford
Auditorium, three blocks away conflict in events has created not
a few parking problems. (Many in RN's audience had surely originally
planned to attend Symphony)
2. Apparently, in the office above Mayor Gribbs, over the weekend,
someone left the shower on all weekend - the results on the carpet of
the Mayor's conference room was a front-page story in Detroit. (RN
might mention to Gribbs that understands he has had a little trouble

with his office plumbing.)
3. NOTE: The day the President is in Detroit, Thursday, an all-black
coalition has called for a boycott of the schools. Purpose of action
to protest Police Departments STRESS (Stop the Robberies -- Enjoy
Safe Streets) Program, which blacks consider repressive especially
in light of death of two black youths Friday night. These blacks also
called for removal of Gribbs. (Gribbs will be on top of this issue as
well)
4. Ehrlichman on looking over Domestic a and A on Parochial suggests
RN use "frame new initiatives for both public and non-public schools"
after the Fall Conference and not get locked into "new recommendations"
in line with the Supreme Court decision.
5. In December, EPA put Detroit on four-month notice to do something
to clean up water in and around Detroit. Before the expiration of that
date, Detroit and EPA came to agreement. Terms: Detroit adopts
an accelerated anti-pollution public works plan. Ruckelshaus, on his own
has released some discretionary funds to help out. Situation now: --
Says Ruck, Sweetness & Light. Though browned off at first, Gribbs
now reportedly satisfied. Possible Conversation Topic.
