U. S. Participation in the Kama River Project QUESTION: Mack Truck, Inc. has stated that the U.S. Government refused to approve its request for an export license for equipment for the Soviet Union's Kama River truck manufacturing plant. Does this constitute a U.S. Government veto of U.S. parti- cipation in the project. ANSWER: It does not. We are examining export license applica- tions for participation in the Kama River project on a case-by-case basis. This examination includes the national security implications of the equipment which would be covered under the licenses. [FYI: Mack's applications were not approved because they were not specific enough to permit proper analysis of their national security implications. Mack was told to submit more details and did not do so. ] License applications by three American firms, totaling approximately $175 million, have been approved. Additional license requests are being considered and these are proceeding on course. (NSC/HAK) we have appoint Aditulare Expects well centin - was they being 150 in 69
