East-West Trade QUESTION: Given the improvement made in East-West relations indicated by the recent Berlin accords, do you foresee any major increase in East-West trade? ANSWER: East-West trade depends on the economic opportunities which present themselves and on the state of political relations between trading nations. I do expect that as our relations with the countries of Eastern Europe improve still further, the amount of trade between the U.S. and the countries of Eastern Europe will continue to expand. We have made progress in this regard. In 1970 our exports to Eastern Europe totaled $353 million as compared with $249 million in 1969. This upward trend has carried forward into 1971 and I am hopeful that this progress will continue. (NSC) (HAK) Oney
