UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF By memener 6.2954 COMMERCE Office of the Secretary SINCLAIR WEEKS, SECRETARY WASHINGTON 25, .D. C. For Release in Wednesday P.M.'s, June 30, 1954 G-473 (Complete list of state apportionments attached) Secretary of Commerce Sinclair Weeks announced today, effective July 1, the apportionment of $875 million as Federal aid to the states for highways, six months ahead of the time-limit set by Congress and several months earlier than apportionments for recent years. This is the first step in the start of the new Federal highway program, under the provisions of the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1954, approved by the President on May 6, 1954. The Act authorizes a total of $1,932,000,000 for grants to states, with state matching money, and other Federal highway projects for the fiscal years beginning July 1, 1955 and 1956. It is the largest two- year sum ever provided for Federal highway programs. The program is under the supervision of the Bureau of Public Roads, Com- merce Department, Francis V. duPont, Commissioner. Secretary Weeks said in a statement: "The speed-up in starting time will have a favorable impact on the economy. One immediate result will be the letting by the states in the next 90 days of approximately an additional $100 million worth of contracts over and above the amount of contracts that otherwise would be let. "As further planning and engineering is completed this year and con- tracts awarded for procurement and construction, there will be a steady Comm--DC--13964 (over) Reproduced at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum
