Dear Mr. Gardiner:
This is just a note to tell you how much I
appreciated the generous comments in your letter of
July 12 concerning my address before the Governor's
Conference at Lake George last month.
Although I have never had any formal
training in public speaking, I participated in debates,
as well as in a number of public speaking contests,
while I was in high school and college. I have always
believed that using a conversational and completely
natural approach is the most effective in communicating
my thoughts and ideas to others, especially those about
which I feel most strongly. Therefore, it is very grati-
fying to have your reactions.
I was interested that you should mention
one of the street meetings in San Francisco during my
1950 Senatorial campaign. I am not sure that I
remember the particular instance, but I do recall
several occasions during that campaign where the
circumstances were at least similar.
With every good wish,
Sincerely,
Richard Nixon
