Dear Mr. Bushman:
This is just a note to thank you for your letter
of August 27 and for the photographs of the 1957 U.S.

Your generous wishes in my behalf were most
heartwarming. I certainly enjoyed seeing the pic-

your thoughtfulness in sending them to me.

Dear Mr. Nixon:
I recently came across some pictures which I thought
you might be interested in having, and I am sending
them to you under separate cover. They are pictures
of the 1957 U. S. Junior Davis Cup Squad--all of whom
you met at Forest Hills. You will recall Bill Talbert
and I endeavored to "Mother" these boys for a six
weeks training period, and they gave me the official
name of Captain U. S. Junior Davis Cup Squad.
I hope we will have the pleasure of seeing you again
at the National Tennis Championships at Forest Hills
next month.
I send you my very best wishes and warmest personal
regards.
Sincerely yours,

Sir:
I want to thank you again and express our ap-
preciation of your presence and presentation
of the trophies at the National Tennis Champion-
ships last Sunday.
It was a great honor and pleasure to have you
with us and a valuable stimulant to tennis and
President Eisenhower's youth fitness program.
From all over the country the response has been
terrific, especially from among the millions
viewing the program on the NBC television network.
We deeply appreciate your interest and participa-
tion which contributed so much to the success of
our National Tennis Championships.
Hoping we will have the opportunity to welcome you
again at Forest Hills, I am

The Hon. Richard Nixon, Vice President,
The United States of America,
Washington, D. C.
Sir;
Much is being said about your visit to Fo-
rest Hills, Long Island, recently-where you pre-
sented the tennis trophy won by Althea Gibson.
Would you, sir, have gone to present the
trophy, had it been won by a member of your own
race ? And, in performing this act, did you do
so as an official duty ?
In the light of the present atmosphere, it
will be of interest to the undersigned to know
the reasons behind this act by one whose high
position elevates to real importance his every
move and utterance.

your letter of September 9.
Schreder, Harold X.
I greatly enjoyed having the opportunity
to see those fine tennis matches at Forest Hills
last Sunday and it was a pleasure to be in such
good company.
Rather than having a secondhand

The letters I received from my
friends at the particular time you mentioned in
1952 helped my morale a great deal and I am
grateful for your continued support.

There are two primary matches. The Women's Singles
and the Men's Singles. The Mixed Doubles follows but lasts until
7:00 p.m. and, in any event, is less important than the Singles
Matches.
Mr. McCann, President of the Forest Hills Lawn Tennis
Association, mentioned that in the past you have awarded the
trophies after each match. He feels, and I agree with him, that
it would be better to have the award ceremony after the second
match (Men S Singles). He was concerned that since Miss Gibson
will probably be the winner of the women S title, a deviation from
established policy might bring up the subject of racial discrimination.
I feel that a single ceremony is far effective and recommend that you
do it this way.
You are clear to leave before the Mixed Dimbles, unless
you care to remain.
