Mr. Vernon Callian
American Committee for the
Independe 01 Armenia
44 West 57th Street
New York 19, New York
Dear Mr. Callian:
The Vice President's office has kindly give to me your
letter of May 15 in which you suggest that Archbishop Khoren Paroyan
who is visiting the United States, might be invited to open the Senate
with prayer on May 28. As the Chaplain of the Senate I would be
very glad to arrange for this if it were not for the fact that on
Friday, May 28 the authorities of the Senate have already announced
that there will be no session on that day. As you know, May 28 is
really a part of the Memorial Day week end. It is customary to adjourn
the Senate, especially if in this case the national holiday falls
on Saturday.
Inasmuch as I take it from your letter that the Archbishop
will be in America for several months it may be that a later date can
be arranged. We are of course in entire sympathy with recognizing
Armenia's right for independence and in our sorrow at the tyranny which
now controls her government. It is a fine thing that Armenians with the
love of freedom in their hearts continue to celebrate the May 28
Independence Day.
We join with you in the ardent hope that another Independence
Day for Armenia may soon dawn. Both the Vice President and myself
hope that the Archbishop may visit us at the Senate at some date which
can be arranged mutually satisfactory to us both.
With every good wish, always and all ways,
Yours cordially,
Frederick Brown Harris
