Letter to Editor of the New York Times This will be the general tone of it: As one who has always admired the Times for its efforts to be accurate and objective in its news columns, I was surprised to note that the very able and readable Cabell Phillips made the understandable error of repeating a widely held misconception in his article of January 8 entitled, "Nixon Is 'Man To Beat' If Eisenhower Is Out. " Or as an alternate first paragraph It is very that a member of the Times staff of able reportere is guilty of a factual error. One of the primary reasons for the great eminence of the Times in the United States and throughout the world is its well deserved reputation for objective and accurate reporting. For that reason, I know you will want to correct error of appearing in the article which appeared in the Times on January 8 in which the very able and readable Cabell Phillips repeats a widely held misconception. The article states " His (Mr. Nixon's) public aareer has shown some contradictory ideological facets from apparent isolationism to unquestioned international ism in foreign affairs 11 I think most of your readers who know the facts will recognize that Vice President Nixon's record does not bear out this statement. On the contrary, there are few members of the House or Senate either Democrat or Republican who have a more consistent internationalist record than the Vice President. JAT -- from the record work out a paragraph -- along these lines The record shows that while lhe was in the House he voted for and against In the Senate he voted for and against A commentary on the article is the Times editorial written immediately following the Vice President's nomination. (JAT - - find that and quote from it also there is, I believe, a good quote in the Congressional Quarterly along those lines When this letter is prepared rmw should give it back to RN for a final check. Reproduced at the Richard Nixon Library and Museum.
