January 19, 1961 Dear Mrs. Helliwell: Before my term of office as Vice President comes to a. close, I want to tell you how deeply grateful I am for all that you did in my behalf during the 1960 campaign. Of all the groups that worked in our campaign, I don't know of any one that was more effective than those who organized and directed our women's activities. The best indication of your success is that, despite the pre-election predictions that Senator Kennedy would get a higher proportion of women voters than we would, the exact opposite turned out to be the case when the votes were cast. There is no question but that a major part of the credit for this achievement goes to you and others who gave so much of your time and effort to the activities of our women's groups in the campaign. I only regret that my efforts could not have been just that extra bit more effective which would have brought victory for those who worked so hard for our cause. As soon as I have made a final decision with regard to my plans for the future, I shall take the liberty of letting you know where I will be and what I will be doing. I hope we can continue to keep in touch with each other, and I would particularly appreciate it if you will write me whenever you have any suggestions as to how we can better further the principles and the cause for which we worked in this campaign. In the meantime, Pat joins me in sending our very best wishes to you. Sincerely, Richard Nixon Mrs. Paul Helliwell 9800 S. I greatly appre- ciate your generous thought in making this award to me but, certainly, the overwhelming majority President Eisenhower received last November must be attributed in no small measure to the devoted efforts of men like yourselves and the members of your organization who made such a personal effort all during the campaign.
