GENERAL SERVICES ADMINISTRATReproduced at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum GSA FORM 7122 (7.72) October 22, 1960 Dear Mr. Trump: I want you to know how much I appreciate the interest which prompted you to write as you did. Your comments regarding the approach we should take in this campaign were certainly most welcome, as I fully agree that only a direct and forceful presentation of our cause can bring victory on November 8. I have been greatly heartened by the response to our efforts so far. In a race this close, however, the issue is yet to be decided, and I shall be counting on you, and on all who believe as we do, to join me in working even more vigorously during the critical weeks ahead for the suc- cess which an all-out campaign will assure. With every good wish, Sincerely, Richard Nixon Mr. Fred Trump 27 Crestmoor Drive Boulder, Colorado Reproduced at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum Hacienda de Vida September 30, 1960 The Hon, Richard M. Nixon Senate Office Bldg. Washington, D.C. Dear Dick: Greatly please to note recent change of pace and move into an "in-fighting" stance, following the first Great Debate. This business of Kennedy's saccharine platitudes, emotional appeals to minorities and emphasis on rosy futures with inaccurate definition of means and costs may be bestcountered by your more aggressive gambit. His obvious recognition of the truism wherein minorities in aggregate constitute the ma jority, reached a new high in ridiculosity at Salt Lake City, when he even denominated Protestant groups - equating with his "minority" faith. Please refer to Sen. K, not by name, but as the" Junior Senator from Massachusetts" ! When will Democrats at large be treated to vociferous pre-convention opinions of the Junior Senator, as stated by his running mate! Should the President appoint you to represent him at the October 24th anniversary of the Berling Freedom Bell, it would be a major coup. As before, polls would react as a Geiger counter over rich uranium lode. There is substantive precedent for such a trip. Surely, it's also needed as a symbol of our Free World determination to remain firm. Pour it on, Dick! Personal regards. OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT Dear Dick: Having lost in the gubernatorial primary, I was not in the official welcoming party when you were in Arizona recently! I was present, however, for your talk, and it was a mighty good one. The national ticket's margin in Arizona, as of now, appears uncomfortably close. Our state ticket is the weakest we've ever fielded, and is a deterent. Our candidates, for the most part, including the gubernatorial aspirant who received substantially less than a majority in the primary, have not been associated with party organization. He and they, significantly lack grass roots support. Our people voted Ike Dick in 152. However, in '54 half our registration failed to go the polls. The chief reason Howard lost their support, and hence the governor's chair to McFarland, was due to his cultivation of the Democrats. This is illustrated by his appointments in a 4 year tenure, 52% of which were staunch Democrats. Those that follow this line again lead our ticket. The majority of the hardworking Republicans have deep convictions on this and other aspects of our present Arizona party leadership. They're sitting on their hands. For my part, I'm working hard to persuade them to go all out national, even if we cannot get them to buy our state ticket. We shall keep at it aggressively all the way. Willoughby U.S.A. Ret., who knows and likes Arizona has kindly written this present newsletter for us. The General has had varied service, ranging from Mil. Attaché U.S. Embassies in Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador to MacArthur's chief of in- telligence, in peace and war. Since his retirement, he has written best-sellers like "Shanghai Conspiracy" and "MacArthur: 1941-1951" and has appeared in "Cosmopolitan", "Readers Di- gest" and syndicated articles. It is with profound gratitude, and considerable humility that I present his letter. " In 1916, I was stationed in Nogales, one of my first military assignments, and I remember Tucson most pleasantly-between skirmishes along the border. I am aware of the tremendous developments in your State, since that time, and compliment you on taking an active part in its politics. Being familiar with the good work you have done for our Country and our Allies, I know what you can do for Arizona. Harking back to those distant days of 1916, it is a far cry from Pancho Villa to Hitler, Stalin and Bulganin. The skirmishes along the Rio Grande were minor family squabbles, compared with the global, back-breaking burdens we have taken on so blithely, in three wars-and the end is not in sight! Parallel with the drainage of our substance in foreign committments, there is an equally dan- gerous, corrosive influence in what Mr. Hoover has termed "creeping socialism", a philosophy of the welfare State, an acceptance of British Fabianism in spite of its scandalous failure; and an arrogation of fiscal powers and Statism that will eventually paralyze business and stifle the incentives of free enterprise. It is later than we think. The great American heritage is in gravest danger. It will take men of your caliber, Fred, to stop and reverse this pernicious trend. I applaud those Arizonans who would draft you for governor. In a real sense, the Southwest may well become the leader in a return to old principles and the historic States' Rights spirit of the Confederacy may yet find its modern triumph. The Eastern Seaboard is politically hybrid, completely internation- alized, brainwashed by two decades of a phony liberalism and utterly corroded by alien in- fluences. There is a light on the horizon, in the South and Southwest. The pioneering spirit of the Great Plains has somehow preserved a clean-cut Americanism that, like charity, puts its own country first. As an old soldier, who once served in Arizona and enjoyed its hospitality, I take the liberty of suggesting that your State needs men like you, Fred, and the United States needs a great many more of the same caliber. This is still America. Let's keep it so!" -Major General Charles A. Willoughby, U.S.A. Retired Washington, D. C. Dear Mr. President: The vast majority of Arizona party organization, both at grass roots and at all key levels, are enthusiastically in favor of an Eisenhower-Nixon ticket. We are deeply concerned in respect to various unseemly pre-convention moves to sidetrack Vice President Richard Nixon. It is our deep conviction that those who are at work in this direction constitute a disproportionately small albeit vociferous minority. Many of them, in any event, would not vote for any Republican. We have canvassed this subject quite thoroughly, and estimate that Mr. Nixon can contribute far more weight to the ticket, as your running mate, than those currently being prominently mentioned. All the best to all of you in the year to come! Fird TRUMP Reproduced at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum copy August 4, 1955 Col. James C. Wood Republican State Committee Phoenix, Arizona Dear Colonel Wood: We understand that slate committees are being formed for purposes of making recommendations of specific state-wide candidates. A group of Republicans, for whom we're the speakers in this instance, wish to be assured that the committee at point has the opportunity to meet and discuss the gubernatorial contest particularly with Fred Trump. Mr. Trump, we believe, is certainly one of the best qualified in Arizona for that office; and, we're con- fident he is one who would make a winning race. We have definite reason to know that he has very strong grass roots support; and, in addition, the financial backing requisite for a standout candidate. We further believe Mr. Trump would seriously consider being the Republican candi- date for governor, even subject to a primary contest. Mr. Trump's personal qualifications are well known and may be readily ascertained by those not wholly conversant. At this time we merely wish to point out some pertinent political considerations that favor his candidacy, as follows: 1. He is a lifelong ardent Republican with no uncertain background or convictions. He has long been active in party interests, i.e. an officer of West Coast YR's, active in YR's in Minnesota and Arizona, accomplished special party work in the Minnesota legislature, active in GOP finance and publicity phases in Eastern states and in connection with two national conventions. 2. Mr. Trump is not new to government service. After acceptance by the F.B.I. he was retained as one of the U.S. Government's top rated consultants, Staff Consultant to the Anglo American Council. Here he made an outstanding record in his work with the leaders of industry, labor and government in both the U.S. and United Kingdom. 3. In 1952, in one of the most predominant Democratic legislative districts in the state, he polled 46%, running significantly ahead of most of our ticket including state-wide candidates. 4. As some criteria of his acceptance, it's noteworthy that despite late decision to file, his 1954 nomin- ating petition was the largest ever filed by a Republican in Pima County history. Reproduced at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum 5. In his '54 State Senate campaign Mr. Trump ran a strong race that not only commanded the outspoken respect of both parties, but sustained more support than the majority of the ticket. His name then and since has emerged as one of the best known and most valuable political names in Pima County. 6. In Arizona party circles, where he has served as a hard- working county precinct committeeman, city ward committee- man, state delegate, and captain of the Tucson Ward 4 organization in the '55 municipal contest - he has developed a real respect amongst the workers of our party. We might point out that we believe Ward 4, which accounted for about half the Tucson vote, had a record 64% turnout of Republican registrants. 7. As 1955-56 State Campaign Chairman in behalf of a major charity, Mr. Trump has already personally met community leaders, addressed service clubs, appeared on radio and/or TV broadcasts and conducted drive meetings about the entire state. In connection with this and other public service activities which he chairmans, Mr. Trump is personally reaching each Arizona county, speaking to diverse groups, etc. Letters have also gone out under his signature to over 300,000 Arizonans, and more continue. He is the only potential Republican candidate, other than those now in Federal office, generally well known around the state. He has had the widest and best press of any non-office holding Republican this year. From personal observation we know for a fact that this total impact is gaining momentum and that by early next year, Fred Trump will, without doubt, constitute one of the strongest pre-campaign candidates that our party has had in Arizona. 8. We like the fact that Mr. Trump advocates the position and policies that Senator Barry Goldwater represents. We believe he is the type of "uncompromising" Republican that our party so greatly needs in Arizona and the nation. In closing, Colonel Wood, we strongly commend this entire matter to the careful consideration of the Slate Committee; and, to all those concerned with the respon- sibility of promoting party unity and strength via definite encouragement of candidates, like Fred Trump, who are real Republicans with positive winning potentialities.
