Dear Roy:
This letter brings with it my heartiest congratulations and
warmest greetings to you and all of those who have worked
so successfully to make Walt Disney World an enchanting
reality. Your kingdom of fantasy will entertain and delight
millions of all ages, from all lands, and in this spirit of
goodwill, I take special pleasure in presenting you with the
flag of the United States which has flown over the White House.
As it is raised in Town Square, may it represent our faith in
the American dream which is so much in evidence at Walt
Disney World.
May this flag further serve as a symbol of hope to your
visitors from around the world and give cause for mutual
understanding just as does the World Symphony Orchestra.
For this distingulahed ensemble of musicians, co-sponsored
by the Disney Organization, has joined its talents, energy
and resources in a splendid tribute to harmony among nations

RE:
WALT DISNEY WORLD VISIT
I talked with Bob X Jani today and he has no violent objections to a
visit on the 22nd. Because of the Grand Opening, this would be an
extremely busy and confusing time for them. Bob feels much more
personal attention and planning could be given to a visit on the 18th.
One possible "advantage" would be that Mrs. Truyens (Walt Disney B
widow) would be present on the 22nd.

Mr. President:
I am writing to you in my capacity as the chief executive
officer of this bank. In just over eighty years the bank has grown
from infancy to become one of the nation's largest mutual savings
banks with assets in excess of $1,600,000,000. The history of the
bank confirms that the nation has achieved real growth and prospered

loyal
American who is concerned by the course of inflation in our Country
today. The occasion which prompts me to write is the decision of
the Pay Board to accept the settlement recently won by the coal-
miners.
I believe that the Cost of Living Council and the Wage
and Price Boards of Phase Two were established with the understanding
that you could review actions which appeared excessive and take steps
to correct wage and price actions which jeopardize the Economic
Stabilization Program.
Public confidence in the Economic Stabilization Program and
in the ability of our Government to bring inflation under control,
has been badly shaken by the decision of the Pay Board to allow the
settlement negotiated by the coalminers. This settlement is reported
to mean an increase of between 15% and 17% in labor costs during the
first year of the new contract. The employees of this Bank, our
depositors, and the public at large, cannot understand or accept
this action without a clearly reasoned explanation. I respectfully
urge you to exercise your power immediately and make a review of the
coalminers' settlement. If you conclude that the settlement was
merited by the circumstances, the explanation should be published.
If, on the other hand, you find that it is in fact excessive,
remedial action should be taken. In either event, your fellow

Americans, and I include the thousands of union members who maintain
savings accounts with our Bank, would welcome your action and be
reassured by it. The public's confidence in the Economic Stabilization
Program must be restored.
I can report that, until this action by the Pay Board, the
Phase Two guidelines were gaining acceptance and support within the
Bank. We had already prepared a schedule of increases within the
guidelines which were consistent with our past practices and the
reaction of our employees to these increases was excellent. Now that
the coalminers' settlement has been allowed to stand without challenge
or explanation, the positive attitude of our staff will undoubtedly
change. I believe that many may feel cheated and forgotten. The
personal sacrifice which they and so many other loyal Americans would
gladly make to stop inflation now seems a wasted effort.
Prompt action now could put us back on the right road and

Sir:
I am a Non-Commissioned-Officer in the United States
Marine Corps on active duty on Okinawa.
I am due to rotate to the states approximately the first of
April 1972. I intend to re-enlist in the Marine Corps and
I also wish to marry an Okinawan National.
Sir, I have requested leave to initiate the paper work
through the proper channels for gettin g married. My leave has
been turned down on two different occasions now. The first dime
was due to a submarine operation that is about to take place.
I was informed that i would be allowed to take my leave after the
operation which was acceptable to me. Since then I had
decided to re-enlist and get married. The day after I informed my
Commanding Officer of my intentions to re-enlist and marry I was
informed that my leave was again cancled and that I was being sent on
a float to the Philippines for a period of six weeks. This
type of harrassment has been going on since I returned to the
Battalion from TAD (Temporary Additional Duty) Status. I have
met harrassment and discouragement all along the way
as soon as I informed my Commanding Officer that I had intentions
to get married to a foreign national. Sir, I am tired of this form
of harrassment and prejudice that is being indicated against my
fiance and myself. Sir, I respect the Marine Corps and as I stated
fore I intend to re-enlist for a period of six years. I feel
however that the Marine Corps has no right to discourage my
marital intentions in this form, by refusing me annual leave
and then sending mg on float just when I try to initiate the
proper procedures for getting married.
Sir, Even though I am a marine, I feel I am entitled to a
home and future if I so decide. I have met nothing but dis-
couragement and harrassment and prejudice since I first initiated
my intentions to get married.
Sir, I have been in the Marine Corps for over four years now and
I have a clean record, I have never received office hours or any
other type of military punishment. I have received a godd Conduct
Medal, a Combat Action Medal, a Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry,
a Vietnamese Campaign Medal, A Vietnamese Service Medal and
a National Defense Medal. I have never been reduced in rank or
any other form of punishmant and I have good proficiency and
conduct marks in my Record Book. All I have asked of my country
in return for fighting in a war for it and risking my life and stay-
ing in the service is to be allowed to have a home and fanily and
be allowed to continue to serve my country as a United States
Marine. I don't believe I am asking too much from my country.
Yet every time I turn around someone is closing a door in my face.
Reproduced at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library
I tend to find this a bit tiring and aggravating.
Sir, I am going to get married and have a home for my
fiance and myself and a future even if it means I must go
against the Marine Corps. For what am I serving my country
for if I can't enjoy the same benefits for which I have fought
for and am prepared to fight for again if necessary.
Sir, I would greatly appreciate any help you could direct
to me concerning this matter as it is of great concern to myself
and my fiance and our future.
Sir, the only person that has attempted to help us with
this problem is our Battalion Chaplain and for that I am in
very greatful, but every time the word marriage is mentioned in
connection with a foreign national this Battalion's doors start
slamming shut and this is going to cease one way or the other
sir. I am tired of the attitude this battalion has towards
marriage and any form of home life.
As I stated before, I don't believe I am asking too much
from my country, to have a home and future and continue to
serve it as a United States Marine.
RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED

Dear Mrs. Waltemyer:
My recent homecoming from China was made
all the more rewarding by your very
thoughtful message, and I want to thank
you for your generous comments.
When I first announced this trip last July,
I described it as a journey for peace.
Now that I have returned, I can say with
confidence that my discussions with the
leaders of the People's Republic of China
have given us the tools to strengthen the
structure for an enduring world peace --
one that is more than the mere absence of
war. For this beginning toward a better
world, I am deeply grateful to the American
people whose goodwill and spiritual support
made this journey possible.

being nothing should be mentioned.

Dear Girls and Boys:
The President has asked me to thank you for your
letters concerning the first report of the Commission
on Marihuana and Drug Abuse. Your interest in giving
the President the benefit of your views is appreciated,
for there is no greater problem facing our Nation than
the matter of drug abuse.
As you may know, the President received the report on
March 21. In a news conference three days later, the
President was asked to comment on that portion of the
Commission's report dealing with the legalization of
marihuana. The President stated:
"I have read the report. It is a report which de-
serves consideration and it will receive it. However,
as to one aspect of the report, I am in disagreement.
I was before I read it and reading it did not change my
mind. I oppose the legalization of marihuana and that
includes its sale, its possession, and its use. I do
not believe you can have effective criminal justice
based on the philosophy that something is half legal
and half illegal. This is my position, despite what
the Commission has recommended."
From this, you can see that the President is firmly
opposed to the legalization of marihuana, and he is
gratified to know you, too, share this view.
With the President's best wishes,
Sincerely,

Who se studied drugs and we think that
legalizing Marissana should it be done. Because
you would have more people in the United

have the pumple who are already on it and
even more people would lisant to true it. Here
at Walt Disney school we hrs its will stay
illegal and we also hope you hoel the same

Richard Quinn, in charge of the Publicity Department and Director of
Marketing for Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, is a close personal
friend of mine and of Ron Ziegler's from college. He is the one who
arranged for us to be in Disney World over the past weekend.
When saw "Sandy" I mentioned to him that Disney World would be a
great place for you to take your children some day. Sandy stated that I should
just let him know when you would like to go down and he will make all
arrangements for you. As Winston Lord and John Howe can attest, you would
have a spectacular time with your children at Disney World.
I only raise it since it is one of those quick things which you would be able to
do for the children on the West Coast.

Dear Mr. President,
I am writing on behalf of the Walt Whitman Key Club in Bethesda, Maryland.
The Key Club is a boys' service organization sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. We
do many service projects for the benefit of our school and community. One of
these projects is to support a scholarship for a student at George Washington
University in Washington, D.C. We raise the money each year for our student by
holding a Celebrity Auction in the spring. We auction off such items as auto-
graphed books and balls, uniforms of famous sports stars, and luncheon dates
with U.S. Senators to the highest bidder. This year we hope to hold the auction
on TV.
If it would be possible, we would very much like to have a card or picture
autographed by you for our auction. I'm sure that it would be one of the high-
lights of the auction.
We would certainly appreciate any help you could give us. Please send any
item to:

The President was happy to sign the attached

As a former Disneyland employee, I wonder if you could do us
a favor. You may recall that in 1959 President Nixon (then the Vice
President) participated in the grand opening ceremonies for the

taken on that occasion. Would it be possible to obtain the President's
autograph on this photograph for display in our Archives? We already
have a nice letter written by the President to Walt Disney on June 22,

We shall be most grateful for any help which you can give us.

Dear Mr. Tatum:
This is in response to your recent letter requesting permission
to use the Presidential Seal on the cover of a record album en-
titled "The Hall of the Presidents.
As you will see from the enclosed, in January, 1971, Public Law
91-651 was enacted for the purpose of restricting the use of the
likeness of the Presidential and Vice Presidential Seals except
as authorized by regulations promulgated by the President.
Pursuant thereto, President Nixon has issued Executive Order
11649, "Regulations Governing the Seals of the President and
Vice President of the United States," a copy of which is also
enclosed.
With regard to your specific request, I call your attention to
Section 1, paragraph (b) of the Executive Order. You will note
that It provides that use of the Presidential
Seal
on the cover of [encyclopedias, dictionaries, books, journals,
pamphiets, periodicals or magazines].
is prohibited. 11
Accordingly, it would not be in keeping with the spirit or intent
of the regulations to authorize the usage of the Seal on the cover
of a record album.
I regret that we cannot be of assistance to you in this manner,
but trust you will understand the necessity of the position we have
taken.
