R. D. #2, Mennonite Road Collegeville, Penna. 19426 October 8, 1972 1972 %The President of the United States The White House Washington, D.C. Dear Mr. Nixon: First let me introduce myself as a twenty-two year old citizen of the United States by natural birth and natural choice, then as a. married woman with one child, then as a student nurse continuing my education, then as a local taxpayer, then as a confused human being questioning several aspects of an "ideal" society of America which I have been taught over the last twenty-two years. I am neither radical nor conservative. I realize what America means to me-my father fought in World War II and my husband has completed his four years enlistment in the United States Air Force; I realize why she must be supported, and I, too, realize that with one annual income life is becoming in- creasingly difficult. Do you realize, Mr. President, that from my husband's annual salary we must allow for 1% school tax, per capita taxes for two, wage earner's privilege tax, state tax, and federal taxes; then if we find the means to buy our own home, rather than renting, we are respon- sible for county and property taxes as well. X NAME TAKEN TO In addition everything we buy save a few items have taxes imposed upon them, cutting down our opportunities for purchasing those items not taxed. As a consumer I find Phase II prices escalating and my husband's income remaining constant. Now you probably ask why am I continu- ing my education, why don't I work also? Mr. President, if you worked for $2.50 per hour and spent $1.00 per hour for child care, un- til the local, state, and federal taxes were deducted, I probably wouldn't have enough to cover my gasoline necessary for transportation! I also have additional reasons for con- tinuing my education. Two years ago, we were residing in your native state, Califor- nia. My husband was going to work at his normal time-4:15 A.M, our child was three weeks old. I hope you will take the time to read the enclosed traffic accident report. Upon checking with the Lynwood Police Depart- ment, I found that Mr. Lopez had already an esteemed criminal record, why was he on the road in the first place? This accident has cost us $7093.94--Manual Lopez was held for ninety days and was put out on probation with the stipulation that he repay us the hospital fee of $4,500.00. To date, even after writing the Los Angeles Probation Department, we have received a mere $200.00! My husband has had two operations and requires a third; he will / need medical treatment until his death. And to top it all, I have to hire a lawyer, Mr. VICTIMS V18 X 2. NAME TAKEN TO 3. NAME Reproduced at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library TAKEN TO Kenneth R. Gordon of the Lawyer Referral Service of the Los Angeles County Bar Assoc- iation, to try and claim benefits under my uninsured motorist's policy with Volkswagen Insurance who proclaims that their insurance does not cover intentional acts! The bills are still coming to me while my case waits to be booked in Los Angeles--so far a long two year wait. Where is the innocent victim protected; is this the law I am to respect and uphold? Am I to forget all the hardship, resentment, and bitterness, and sigh, "That's life?" Could you Mr. President? What can I do but wait and hope that the judge will see our point of view; how can I be optimistic when Mr. Lopez was jailed for ninety days and is not even compelled to pay his stipulated probation. When I face hardship saving up the taxes demanded of me by society, is this the thanks I get? California is your native state, you are my President, then tell me what can I do? This past June and again in August, when testifying on H.R. 16141 (the Carey-Mills bill), Administration spokesmen publicly endorsed legis- lation for tax credits for tuition to non-public schools. This, in President Nixon's judgment and the judgment of others concerned with the crisis of the non-public schools, is the most promising way to obtain that help. You may be assured that the President will not relax his efforts until he is convinced the non-public school system is on the road to recovery. This is essential, for plu~ ralism in education is an American tradition which supports the diversity of our society. America's non-public schools enrich not only those who attend them and those who teach in them, but all of us in this land. Our non-public schools need help, and the President is irrevocably committed to providing that assistance. With my best wishes, Sincerely, Roland L. D. #2, Mennonite Road Collegeville, Penna. 19426 November 1, 1972 President Richard M. Nixon Washington, D. C. Dear Sir: D. Waltemyer I recently received your answer via L.M. Pellerzi in a num- bered reply--ARC-37-3-132. I thank you for your reply; however, I feel disappointed with the contents of the reply; it offerred no directional course to follow. I realize that I am one of 2 million people from whom you receive complaints, but I also realize that I have an annual in- come under $5000.00 of which approximately $1400.00 will be re- turned to the Federal and State governments--the largest expendi- ture to the Federal governmert. Aren't I supporting a government which views n° only as a computerized number which pays yearly fed- eral income tax? You do realize that the offender, Mr. Lopez, is out on proba- tion not meeting the requirements of his probation dictated by law and that this incident can be repeated upon another innocent vic- tim? Is it only if he tries to murder a Federal employee that it becomes recognized as "Federal Interest?" Sir, is it asking too much for you to understand the financial hardship incurred from this unnecessary incident; are we not justified in complaining over California's 2½ year put-off for a court date? Can we really afford as a nation to compartmentalize justice? When you and Mrs. Nixon send your best wishes, as your recent cam- paign telegram recently said, ask yourselves. I am confident that without the heavy bombing of key targets and the mining of the harbors, our men would not have been released. For these very tough decisions which you so courageously made, every true American Citizen owes you a heartfelt thanks. I, personally, most humbly and gratefully thank you. I am also extremely grateful to you, Sir, for the strong and tough stand you are taking on law enforcement and drug abuse. Having headed the Senate investigation of the International Narcotics Traffic and its Impact on U. S. Security, I am very conscious of the terrible danger facing our Nation from the threat of drugs. I firmly believe that this problem must be solved inside our borders. We must eradicate the drug pushers and the addicted. These two groups constitute the market and so long as the market is here we will not be able to stop the majority of the supply, either at its source, in foreign countries, or during transient to the u. S. market. Reproduced at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library Page 2 The President I am also convinced that our drug problem is not one to be solved primarily by our national and state governments. It is a community "illness" and must be solved at the community level with support from the state and national level.
