'84 Campaign Letters to Jim Baker
I have enclosed several letters from individuals who have
expressed an interest in working on the 1984 campaign, should the

Unless specifically noted, most of these writers are people that
Jim Baker does not know or that he at least does not know well.
Please handle any follow-up as your office deems appropriate.
Thanks -- and please call me at 456-6797 if you have any
questions.

Dear Mr. Borman:
Thank you for your letter of September 16. I appreciate your
taking the time to apologize for the delay of NASA's Eastern
Airlines' charter on August 28, 1983.
I am afraid that I may not accept your generous offer of a
$50.00 travel certificate for use on any Eastern Airlines
flight in the next year. As a government employee partici-
pating in a government charter on August 28, I do not feel
that it would be appropriate for me to use this certificate.
Consequently, I have enclosed coupon #007-4900-125-590.
Thank you once again for your kind letter. I appreciate your

MEMORANDUM FOR:
FRED FIELDING
FROM:
KATHERINE CAMALIER
SUBJECT:
Campaign Material
Mr. Baker is starting to receive a small collection of
"campaign material" that members of the general public are
producing and sending to our office for his perusal, etc.
To date, Mr. Baker has received a jellybean tie, several
T-shirts and a "Reagan '84" badge that lights up.
I have not been logging these in as they obviously have no
real value. I have simply been acknowledging them with a
letter under my signature, and, where appropriate, forwarding
any requests for orders to Ed Rollins.
Does our office need to do anything more than this? May Mr.
Baker keep these "mementos"?
Please advise. Thanks.

Dear Fred:
Thank you for your letter of November 4.
I appreciate your sensitivity and concern regarding the recent
Dallas Times Herald story involving Trammell Crow. As you
know, Trammell has been a close friend of mine since the
President Ford Committee days and a person for whom I have the
utmost respect and admiration. I deeply regret this and would
strongly reprimand the "source" of those remarks if I knew
whom that person was.
Thank you once again for taking the time to write. I can
assure you that we appreciate your hard work for the
Republican Party and look forward to working with all those
involved in the 1984 Convention in Dalllas.

JAB:
I spoke to Dan Brenner, the Legal Assistant in Chairman Mark
Fowler's office at FCC.
He said that generally they would not do anything about
that New York phone number unless they received a
substantial number of complaints. The main reason for
this is that nobody is actually being victimized by or
subjected to this taped message unless they actually
initiate the phone call themselves. If, in fact, someone
was circulating this phone number and misleading other
people regarding its message, then they would/could
investigate it.
Dan Brenner also pointed out that the FCC is dealing with a
whole new ballgame now with modern technology (answering
machines, etc.) and that they are only just setting up
guidelines, etc. for dealing with the potential problems
that might arise from their use/misuse.
FYI, also, the FCC can investigate such matters through the
phone company.

My staff sponsored an afternoon with thirty students from
Congress Heights Elementary School on Friday, January 20,
1984. Officer
was assigned to assist our staff
in the various events held in the White House and the Old

It would be unfair for me not to give a good part of the

FOIA(b) (7(c)
credit for the success of our afternoon to Officer
She was highly professional, exceedingly competent and very
responsive to the questions and needs of the Congress Heights
students.
Officer
conducted a U.S.S.S. slide presentation,
escorted the children to the President's helicopter departure,
and provided an interesting and exciting tour of the White

were escorted promptly and efficiently to their bus at the
conclusion of the afternoon.
I highly commend the professional manner and superior conduct
of Officer
She was a true pleasure to work

Dear Ms. Page:
Thank you for your letter and please forgive our delay in
responding. In the midst of a surprisingly hectic summer,
we have fallen behind in our office corresondence.
Mr. Baker appreciates your taking the time to write. He
apologizes for your having not received a reply to your June
1981 letter, but does not recall having seen a letter from
you. Perhaps it was lost in the mail.
Mr. Baker advised me that he did not think that his parents
would want their personal lives to be included in any
publication. Consequently, he does not want to approve your
request. He hopes that you will understand his decision.

Dear Mr. Norris:
Mr. Baker has asked me to thank you for your letter of
September 1. He is sorry that his schedule has been so hectic
that he has not had an opportunity to get back to you in
writing or on the telephone.
Mr. Baker appreciates your offer to remove the Jim Baker
billboard on the S.W. Freeway. He said that if you have the
time and are truly interested in doing this, that he would
have no objection. He does not want to have to pay to have it
removed though.
The Bakers were pleased to hear that your daughter, Vivian,
will be studying at Mount Vernon College. They asked that you
send her their best wishes.
Thank you once again for taking the time to write. Mr. Baker

C. Samuel Marasco has forwarded a copy of his 1984-85 White

I understand from Secretary Ray Donovan and Father Leonard
Bachmann that Mr. Marasco is a highly-qualified and extremely
capable individual. His 1983-84 application cleared several
of your preliminary screening processes.
I have attached a copy of Mr. Marasco's current application

credentials.

Dear John:
Thank you for your recent letter.

I understand from Margaret Tutwiler that you are
interested in working on the 1984 campaign, should the
President decide to seek reelection. We will forward your
resume to Paul Laxalt and Ed Rollins for their information and
attention. While it is still early for any specific organi-
zation or hiring, I will ask that they contact you at an
appropriate time to discuss any possible job openings.
I wish you much success with your future endeavors.

Dear Dr. Cummings:
I understand that John Chapoton, the son of close family
friends, is interested in joining the Class of 1988 at
Princeton University. Princeton is his first choice and, as a
former member of your screening committee in Houston, I am
truly impressed by John's credentials.
John will be a senior this fall at Andover Academy in Massa-
chusetts. He boasts a 4.5 grade point average with honors in
almost all of his subjects. His participation in the school's
extra-curricular activities is exemplary, as I am sure that
you will see on his application. John is a member of
Andover's Leadership Council, a dorm proctor, a reporter and
photographer for the school newspaper and a trumpet player in
the school's jazz band.
John's main interests lie in government and economics. As a
member of Andover's Model United Nations Club, John was named
"Best Delegate in the Security Council" last year.
I wholeheartedly endorse John Chapoton's application to
Princeton and hope that you will recognize his outstanding
qualifications. Please keep me advised of your decision.
Thank you.
Sincerely,

Dear John:
Once again I find myself thanking you for your kind invitation
to join you for a quail hunt this February. You don't know
how much I would have enjoyed such an opportunity!
In looking at my 1984 schedule, I will be accompanying the
President on a "western swing" the second week of February.
The rest of that month, as well as March, do not appear much
more promising in terms of "free time." I am sorry that I
will not be able to take you up on your invitation and
appreciate your thinking of me again this year.
I can assure you that I will keep our quail hunting weekend
high on my list of priorities once I am no longer White House
Chief of Staff and can afford to "get away from it all."
Hurriedly, but with best regards.
