Dear Mr. Baker:
I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you how pleased I was to see the announcement
a few weeks ago, regarding your appointment as Chief of Staff. It is obvious you have
your work cut out for you, but I am positive you will be very successful in the task.
You have a combination of great intelligence, length experience, tact and monumental
charm -- an unbeatable combination!
I finally had to retire my "BELLE OF AMHERST" project last year with very mixed emotions.
The one good thing about theater is that it can always be "revived". I don't know
whether you may recall, but I had written to you further about the Judy Garland project,
and we have decided to go non-profit and apply for grant funding to try and get it pro-
duced this coming season I believe funds were applied for through the John F. Kennedy
Center for the Performing Arts -- so please cross your inveterate fingers for us, in that
regard.
It appears likely that I will be cast as the governess in "THE INNOCENTS", sometime this
fall, in Chicago -- and, will continue to hope that some trip to Chicago may allow you
to see me perform, at some point.
Again, my sincere congratulations and best wishes to you in this new undertaking. You're
"in the White House now", Howard Baker!
With Kind Regards

A lot of water has gone over the dam since you entered
politics at the University of Jennessee. You have per-
formed admirably in each of your previous undertakings
for the citizens of the Jennessee Valley. Your present
endeavor for our country is by far the most awesome and
important of your career. I am confident your outstand-
ing abilities, your devotion to our country, and your
deep understanding of our form of govermment will be of
immeasurable assistance to the President in restoring
faith in America throughout the world.
Over the past ten days I have talked to people from
Florida to Jennessee. They, without exception, share
my enthusiasm of your appointment.
Congratulations! Thank you for accepting the assign-
