My first letter was to offer my services to assist your campaign manager in Illinois, in the event you decided to run for the presidential office. Apparently, you will probably delay any aspirations for the moment. Congratulations, on your acceptance of the post of Chief of Staff of the White House. I am very confident that with your skills in government, management, and business, that the new White House team will hit all targets on the bullseye. Again, if your programs need any future assistance in time and effort, then I would be appreciative of any consideration. Sincerely, R. John R. I am so happy that you accepted that important position of CHIEF OF STAFF. I have great confidence that you are the man we need at this time to fill that great job. However, I am disappointed that you refuse to run for president in 1988. I was really looking forward to that. I assure you of my prayers for the success of your work. God bless you in coming to our rescue in this time of need. I am sure I speak for many others. Wood Advantage III Group Suite 107 1441 King Avenue Columbus, Ohio 43212 HHB/SW/WJB/ptf2 HHB-1 HHB-1 March 2, 1987 Senator Howard Baker 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Washington, D.C. Dear Senator Baker: This letter is written in sincere appreciation of your acceptance of the position as President Reagan's Chief of Staff. Putting Country before Party, and Party before Politics, you have exemplified the best character of true statesmanship. Yes, you could have entered the 1988 Presidential contest, and perhaps succeeded, but I read by your actions that you understand the need for two more years of a strong Reagan Presidency. The policies and programs of this Administration have positively affected the future of this nation beyond what any of us many now realize. The possibility of a lameduck President, and subsequent potential victory of a Democratic candidate in 1988, has been seriously challenged by your positive action to help not only your President and party, but also your country. Again, thank you for your acceptance of this honored but difficult position. Our prayers are with you. Sincerely, David E. Wood baw March 12, 1987 Dear Mr. Warren: Thank you for your kind message. Your acceptance as relief of Chief of Staff Regan is a classical stitch in time. I noticed an immediate slack in the HUFF and PUFF of the press. I have to admire Mr. Regan, he piled up a life time of plusses, however, I have to believe he was a driver in a leader's seat. This old sailor has been exposed to the whole spectrum. Again congratulations, glad to see you back in Washington. Very respectfully yours, Jussell Russell L. Dear Mr. Baker: I am enormously glad that you are in the White House in a position of influence. The only thing better would be if you were President. Very truly yours, Katherine Duncan Katherine F. Duncan P.S. In 1973, my family acquired two young black cats, siblings, of great charm. One we named Sam Ervin Duncan and the other Howard Baker Duncan. Sam was the sweetest being anyone had ever encountered; he has since gone to his reward. Howard has some vinegar in his personality, enough to have character but not enough to be sour. He is well and living happily in Stowe, Vermont with my brother, sister-in-law, nephew and several other cats. March 12, 1987 Dear Mr. Granieri: Thank you for your kind message. Box 374 Gatlinburg, TN 37738 436-4691 Pastor's Study Pastor's Residence 436-5346 March 6, 1987 The Honorable Howard Baker Chief of Staff The White House Washington, D.C. 20002 Dear Mr. Baker: My reaction to your acceptance of President Reagan's request to be his Chief of Staff was a mixed one. My first reaction was a positive one. I felt that you were the finest choice he could have made for that sensitive position. My negative reaction centered in your becoming involved with an administration so full of scandal and unethical if not illegal activity. Through the years I've admired your effective leadership and your high prin- ciples. I've been proud that you represented Tennessee and did so with such distinction. I have always felt that you were guided by principles which were shaped by your Christian commitment. Much of this will be tested in your new position. My plea is that your first loyalty not be to President Reagan. It was this kind of commitment that put the administration into such shambles. May I suggest that the order of your commitments be as follows: 1) Truth; 2) Your principles guided by Christian Commitment; 3) The Nation; 4) The world status and relations of the country; and lastly, 5) to the President. I say this from the understanding that Mr. Reagan needs a commitment to the truth and to Christian principles and your ordering of priorities and commitments can be helpful to him in this regard. What might look best to him in terms of what is dramatically appropriate might not be in the best interests of our nation. On balance I am delighted that you are where you are. I do feel that your leadership will again shape and guide the nation effectively. Yours is a most difficult and sensitive responsibility. I am certain that you are more than adequate for the task. My best wishes to you. Sincerely, Charles Beyon Charles M. Bryan, Paston CMB/bjp
