Dear Mrs. Grudzinski:
Thank you for your thoughtful letter of June 25
and for your encouragement in regard to the
1980 Presidential election.
My only commitment right now is to secure
reelection to the Senate from Tennessee in
1978. Thereafter, I will have to pause and
seriously evaluate my future political plans.
I am grateful for your words of confidence and
support. I certainly hope to continue to merit
your trust in the future, and my best wishes
are with you.
Sincerely,
Howard H. Baker, Jr.

Dear Ms. Grudzinski:
Thank you very much for your support of my campaign for
the presidency.
I will never forget that your commitment to my campaign came
at this early stage, and I hope both the campaign and my
service in the White House if that campaign is successful will
prove worthy of your confidence in me.
I hope I can count on your help as the campaign progresses.

Dear Marcella:
Thank you for your most recent letters and
the nice card. I apologize for the long delay
since I have been in touch. My schedule of late
has prohibited the prompt response I prefer.
I very much regret that I was unable to at-
tend the meeting in Denver. I had been looking
forward to the event and was disappointed to have
missed the opportunity to visit with you and my
other supporters in the area. Your selling your
rings in order to purchase a ticket to the event
meant more to me than you know--your loyalty is
deeply appreciated. However, I hope you know
that I would never ask anyone to do more than
they are able.
Again, please accept my apologies; and I hope
we will have a chance to visit again in the not-too-
distant future.

Mrs. Andrew Grudzinski

Dear Mrs. Grudzinski:
Thank you for your recent encouragement and expression of
support.
After careful consideration, I have decided not to seek election
to a fourth term as a United States Senator from Tennessee. It
has been the greatest honor of my life to serve the people of
Tennessee in the Senate. My debt to my fellow Tennesseans is
immeasurable and one I could not hope to repay no matter how long
or well I might try to serve them.
It has long been my personal conviction that, for me, service in
the Senate would not and should not be a lifetime career. I have
often spoken of my desire to see the Congress function as a
citizen legislature in which men and women from many walks of
life serve for a time without severing all ties to the places and
callings they are elected to represent. Acting on this belief, I
have resolved to leave the Senate at the conclusion of my term in
December, 1984. Until that time, I will continue to do the best
I possibly can to represent my state and her people.
It is my belief and my hope that President Reagan will seek
reelection in 1984. I have urged him to do so and intend to
support him. However, I also intend to stay active in Republican
and public affairs.
In that regard, I am hopeful our paths will cross again and I
once more thank you for your thoughtfulness.
Haward Sincerely, 15h
