MEMORANDUM FOR MICHAEL K. DEAVER
FROM:
WILLIAM HENKEL
&
SUBJECT:
MAGNETOMETERS ON CAPITOL HILL
As of 5:00 p.m. today, the magnetometer situation at the
Capitol seems to have been resolved to the satisfaction of
the Joint Congressional Inaugural Committee. The Secret
Service has agreed to the following:
A total of 66 walk thorugh magnetometers will be
dedicated to screening of crowd only. Thirteen
magnetometers will be positioned on the North side
and thirteen will be positioned on the South Side.
These 26 magnetometers will be dedicated to the
screening of the 25,000 seated guests and the 10,000
preferred standees.
The remaining 40 magnetometers will be located on the
Lower West Drive and will be dedicated to all other
spectators. As you know, a total of 145,000 tickets
will be distributed. Therefore, these 40
magnetometers are dedicated to approximately 110,000
guests.
The 66 walk through magnetometers will be
supplemented by 100 hand held magnetometers. If a
serious logjam arises, these hand held magnetometers
will be pressed into service.
If the logjam continues, the Service has agreed and
committed to opening all magnetometers at 11:30 A.M.
and those remaining in line will be permitted to
proceed through the gates without being screened.
This should insure that all guests will be able to
reach their seats or standing areas without
difficulty in time for the ceremony.
I have requested that these commitments be confirmed
in writing.

INAUGURAL
Washington. D.C.
20599
202/433-7100
Michael K. Deaver, General Chairman of the Committee for the 50th
American Presidential Inaugural, today announced the procedures for the
general public to purchase tickets to the 1985 Inaugural Parade.
There will be three categories of seats for the Inaugural Parade:
Reserved seats at $12.50 per ticket;
Preferred seats at $75 per ticket; and,
Premium seats at $100 per ticket.
Reserved seats run along the Parade route. Preferred and Premium
tickets allow access to a special viewing area on Pennsylvania Avenue
across the street from the White House and the Presidential reviewing
stand.
Ticket sales will begin Monday, December 17, 1984, and requests
will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
Tickets for Reserved seats only will be sold through Ticketron at
their outlets across the country or by calling the toll-free number
1-800-445-9574 [States that do not have toll-free 800 service may
direct dial (312) 853-3636.]
Tickets for Preferred and Premium seats can be purchased directly
from the Presidential Inaugural Committee at (202) 433-7160 or by
writing:
Inaugural Parade Tickets
Box 1985
Washington, D.C. 20013-1985
There is no limit to the number of tickets a person can purchase,
but all sales are final.
The Inaugural Parade, one of the most colorful and delightful
traditions associated with the Inaugural, dates from the first
Inauguration of George Washington in 1789.
This year the 50th Presidential Inaugural Parade will take place on
Monday, January 21, 1985, beginning at 2 o'clock at the U.S. Capitol and
proceeding down Pennsylvania Avenue past the White House. Award-winning
bands, marching units, floats and equestrian teams representing all 50
states will participate with military units in the Parade.
Parade participants will be announced at a later date.
The public is encouraged to purchase tickets early to insure a
reserved seat.

Washington--The Committee for the 50th American Presidential Ineugural is
now accepting requests for media credentials for all inaugural events beyond the
grounds of the U.S. Capitol. These include the parade, galas, official receptions,
concerts, the inaugural balls, and any other official committee events.
The contact office for media credentialing at the committee is:
MEDIA CREDENTIALS OFFICE
COMMITTEE FOR THE 50TH AMERICAN PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURAL
1900 ANACOSTIA DRIVE, S.E. (ROOM 306)
WASHINGTON, D.C. 20599
Telephone: 202/433-7775
The swearing-in ceremonies at the Capitol will be credentialed by the
Congressional Press Galleries. Instructions for obtaining credentials from the
Congressional Press Galleries are covered in a separate advisory issued by the
Gelleries.
The Inaugural Committee hopes to make the credentialing process work
quickly and smoothly by minimizing the flow of paperwork. To help us do this.
please clip and reproduce the following form. and fill out one for each person you
wish to have credentialed. Return the completed forms to this office so they
arrive not later than December 31, 1984. Incomplete forms cannot be processed,
so please be thorough. When you return the forms, include a cover letter on your
organization's letterheed, with the name and social security number or campaign
pass number (or passport number for foreign journalists) of each person for
whom you are submitting a form.
Freelance photographers must include a letter of assignment, on a news
organization's letterhead, and signed by an editor.
Foreign news organizations should submit their completed materials directly
to:
Tom Swinson, Deputy Director
Foreign Press Center
808 National Press Building
Washington, D.C. 20547
Telephone: 202-662-7115/6/7/8
The information requested is basically the same as that required for
inaugural credentials in the past. However, this year we ask that you rank the
various events in order of importance to you. This will assist us in allocating
space and setting priorities. We urge you to get the cover letter and completed
forms to us as quickly as possible. We will try to assign local news organizations
to those inaugural balls where their home state delegation is assigned.
