Dear Mr. Dever and/or Mr. Baker:
LISTEN! I am a Reagan supporter, an Independent who would have
voted for Hart but never even considered Mondale.
Cool it on the religion issue. Those ultraconservatives will do
the Republican party in yet! An ad by a former Miss America
which I saw in whole on CNN was a hatchet job unworthy of the
President; and it can only hurt him. Nor was Miss Prewitt an
effective speaker afterwards, not even knowing the difference
between Bush's stand and Ferraro's. Another ultraconservative
saying this ad was being shown because some people might be
ignorant of the facts did Reagan no good either. Truly, we are
more intelligent than most politicians give us credit for.
Last evenings news showing Mondale being heckled constantly did
more to get him votes than anything he has probably done recently.
Mondale was practically licking his lips. STOP IT! This is the
best thing that has happened to Mondale in a long time.
The anti-abortionists better be careful also, or they will overplay
their hand. You have to understand--many of us against abortion do
not favor an amendment. Many of us say, for a "Quiet Moment" do not
favor an amendment for prayer in public schools.
There is a long way to go in this too long election year! Don't
get cocky. Reagan has peaked early. Get those ultraconservatives
in line; or they will close the gap FOR Mondale yet!
Sincerely,
Mary Mary Ann Bienas Biener

Dear Mr. Sittman:
The City of Hope members express their deepest appreciation
for your most gracious reply to my letter suggesting that a
Medal of Freedom be considered for Major Glenn Miller post-
humously.
It is a pleasure to report that the Miller Estate and the Miller
children (who will be attending our event) have approved of the
use of the Glenn Miller name for our chapter.
Through the good offices of the Department of the Army Los Angeles
Branch Public Affairs, we have also located a fine 16 minute. Army
Signal Corps film of Glenn Miller and his Air Corps Band shortly
after arriving in England in 44, which we intend to run during
our Salute ceremonies. All in all, the Glenn Miller Benefit Ball
bids fair to be one of Orange County's outstanding events this
year. The Medal of Freedom would honor Glenn Miller far more than
our modest efforts in this area.
Most gratefully,

Re: Glenn Miller City of Hope Chapter
Dear Mr. Altieri:
Reference is made to your letter of September 1,
1984, and our subsequent telephone conversation about
the proposed Glenn Miller City of Hope Chapter.
Both of the Miller children, Jonnie D. Soper and
Steven D. Miller, and Polly Davis Haynes, as Successor
Executrix and Successor Trustee of Trust Under the Will
of Helen D. Miller, have approved use of the name of
Glenn Miller for the newly organized Glenn Miller City
of Hope Chapter.
Please consider this letter a formal clearance for
the use of the name for that chapter.
We would appreciate being kept advised of the
activities of the Glenn Miller City of Hope Chapter
so that we can pass this information on to the family
members and to Polly Davis Haynes.

Dear Mike:
The enclosed news release by Martin Evans is, as one might
suspect, inaccurate. The statement I made regarding this
Administration is as follows:
"With the desperate need for digestive disease centers,
of which we have none, Mr. Meyerhoff and I decided that,
as the Reagan Administration has suggested, private sector
should take the lead. For that reason and the desperate
need for centers such as this, as well as the hope that
after the Center is established the Federal Government
will respond to medical needs and help, as an example
has been set
"
That is what I said. I did not chide our President.
As the article suggests, Bud is the Vice Chairman of the
Hopkins. This Center came about at an opportune time since the
Hopkins is embarking upon the largest campaign of its sort in the
country. So that was the catalyst -- but the main purpose, of
course, is a leadership gift to this campaign.
Michael, Michael, I feel badly being out of the country
November 6th. Please notify someone in your realm of activity
that they should let the lil' old lady in tennis shoes aboard

Dear Mike:
Enclosed is a copy of the letter from Paul Hegness
and a color photograph of a bronze eagle outlined in
the letter. In talking to Paul this morning, essentially
they would like:
a. If possible, to have a decision by next
Tuesday prior to their benefit (outlined
in paragraph two).
b. They would like at some time to come to
the White House to present this to the
President. This certainly could be done
after the election.
C. They would present it to the President on
behalf of his friends in Orange County.
d. They would like to give this in such a way
that it could be on display during part
of the President's term and then be part
of the permanent collection of the Reagan
library.
If you could review this at your convenience and get
back to me, I would be happy to work with you on any basis
that you would like. Possibly you could express your intention
or your willingness to accept this request as soon as possible,
and in turn that would help them with their Benefit auction
next Tuesday. I am told the cost of this has been appraised
at $45,000.

Dear Joe:
Pursuant to our telephone conversation of yesterday, enclosed
please find two photographs of "Spirit of America", the original
bronze casting with marble base that I discussed with you on the
telephone. The piece is a unique and impressive lifesize wildlife
sculpture in bronze of an American Bald Eagle poised in the "yak"
position with wings flared, all of which sits on top of a verde
granite base. The entire piece, created by Harold Sheltan, stands an
impressive 6'2" and weighs approximately 1200 lbs. The limited
edition of 76 issued bronzes are included in the collections of Gene
Autry and Burt Reynolds, among others.
At a recent cocktail reception to unveil the tenth issue in the
series of 76 for benefit sale in Orange County on September 25,
proceeds of which go to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Orange County,
Don Koll, Bruce Nestande, Brad Gates (Orange County Sheriff) and I
were discussing the imposing feeling created by the sculpture and
unanimously came to the conclusion that one of these pieces really
should find its way to the White House and ultimately to President
Reagan's library.
After obtaining a commitment from the artist to sell us the 40th
piece in the series (commemorating the 40th President), we decided
that we would like very much to purchase this piece, and make a
donation of the piece under whatever circumstances would seem most
advisable so that ultimately the piece might rest in the White House
during President Reagan's second term, and then ultimately in his
Presidential Library. We would propose to put together a group of the
President's Orange County friends who would jointly acquire the piece
and make a gift of it in a presentation to the President in
Washington, D.C.
Mr. Joe Canzeri
September 18, 1984
Page 2
The purpose of our proposal is several fold. Foremost, all of us
are friends and supporters of the President's and we believe that this
particular piece of art is so unique that it is the kind of thing that
we would simply like to do as a demonstration of our friendship and
support. The peripheral benefits include, we hope, enhancing the
value of a sister piece to the issue which will be auctioned September
25. Concurrently, we hope that the act of a presentation of this
nature might tend to enhance the kind of demonstrative support for the
President in this very import election year and have some positive
impact upon our mutual efforts to re-elect the President.
While we recognize that this is extremely short notice, one of
our motives, as I have previously pointed out, is to enhance the value
of the sister piece at the auction next Tuesday evening, and
accordingly, if there is anyway we could have some kind of a positive
response prior to that auction, we would sincerely appreciate the
same.
On behalf of all of us who are interested in this project, I
extend our appreciation for your willingness to present our plan and
concept.
Very truly yours,
Paul C. Hegness

USIA
Dear Mike:
I am enclosing a copy of some recent reports I received from our
Television and Film Service describing the enthusiastic response that
some of the latest USIA efforts have received overseas.
USIA attempts to acquire limited rights for commercial programs where
the situation warrants. For instance, since drug abuse is a growing
concern in Barbados, our PAO requested a film for Barbados
Television. TV sent him a videotape program hosted by Nancy Reagan.
The show got rave reviews from both the press and the public.
USIA provides technical and facilitative assistance to foreign
television organizations operating in the US. I'm enclosing our
"Key," which explains how this system works. Recently, our
Television Co-production staff received kudos for a 45-minute
documentary on the Olympic Arts Festival co-produced with Austrian
Television.
Finally, our "TV Satellite File," a weekly videotaped compilation of
brief news and feature stories, continues to receive high praise (and
increased usage) from foreign broadcasters. Through this service
we're able to bring positive, informative stories on American society
directly to foreign audiences in more than 90 countries around the
world.
These are just a few highlights from the work performed by our
Television and Film Service. I am sure you will share my enthusiasm
for the job our people are performing.
Your comments, as always, are welcome.
Best regards.

RAVES FOR BARBADOS TV SCREENING OF DRUG VCR
Both USIS Barbados and the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC)
were flooded with calls of praise following the showing of THE
CHEMICAL PEOPLE: THE CHEMICAL SOCIETY, a VCR on drug problems.
USIA-TV had arranged special one-time TV rights. The Post reports
that "the response has been so overwhelming that the show is to be
repeated at a later date." A columnist for the Sunday Star
Newspaper wrote "Five stars and grateful congratulations to the
United States Information Service (USIS) and CBC for bringing THE
CHEMICAL PEOPLE here [which] is a much needed and excellently
produced eye-opener that deserves to be repeated more than once."
In response to growing concern in Barbados about growing drug use,
the Post had ordered that VCR and another one, THE CHEMICAL PEOPLE:
THE COMMUNITY ANSWERS, for which we are also seeking special TV
rights at the Post's request in order to take advantage of the great
interest generated by the showing of the first segment.
AUSTRIAN TV AIRS CULTURAL OLYMPICS CO-OP
Austrian TV's 45-minute documentary on the Olympic Arts Festival,
made in cooperation with USIA TV, was aired in prime time for an
estimated audience of 900,000. USIS Vienna reports that "reviews
were very favorable." The Hoer Zu TV Guide commented that "this
report offered just the right mixture of information and
entertainment," while the conservative daily Neues Volksblatt said,
"this cultural magazine from L.A. was by the way much better than
the broadcasts which one can see right now on German language TV."
The producers of the program praised the professional advice and
assistance provided by USIA-TV staffer Rosemary Mitchell. She and
USIA recieved a credit byline, the first time in the Post's co-op
history with ORF that that had happened.
MORE PRAISE, PLACEMENTS FOR TV SATELLITE FILE
Positive assessments and placement reports on TV SATELLITE FILE keep
coming in. Recent examples:
-- A representative for UPITN in London has written that he
finds SATFILE "invaluable" and "as a rule of thumb, I'd
say I use around 50 percent of the feature-oriented
material."
-- Channel 4 in Manila is using SATFILE clips regularly on
"Trends," a new daily program. The show uses SATFILE
clips as a lead-in to the day's topic, which is then
discussed by a local guest.
-2-
-- Jordan TV (JTV) has been using a high percentage of
segments regularly on prime time immediately following
the major Arabic and English newscasts. JTV also put
together a 30-minute "Olympic Preview" from SATFILE
stories, and they are planning a special biweekly program
called "Far From Politics," which will be made up
exclusively of SATFILE material.
-- Belgrade Television uses approximately 60 percent of the
material received and retains the remainder in its
archives for possible future use.
-- The producer of a world news report on the Sydney-based
network 0-28 writes that he regards SATFILE "as a
valuable addition to the news department's sources." "
-- USIS Santo Domingo reports that both SATFILE and SCIENCE
WORLD " have been very popular with media here. Continue
the high quality. And keep them coming."

Dear Sir:
My son is a recent graduate of
Georgetown University Law Center. For all of
his life he has been an admirer of President
Reagan and is currently working for his
reelection.
My request may strike you as unusual,
but I want to present him with a pair of

is a limited supply available but I will pay
any price to secure a pair for him. He has
quite a collection of Ronal Reagan memorabilia

I am very much aware that you are in

your attention to this request would be very
much appreciated.

Dear Mr President,
Over thirteen months ago Nancy came to our school to kick off a drive
against drugs and drug abuse. The visit sparked within the school a renewed hope
to get our students involved in the American system of government and to do our part
in attacking this problem.
During the 1983-84 school year we inaugurated The Assembly Program" and in
addition an internship program to get students involved in government and to attack
the problem of drug abuse.
In reporting to you our success far beyond our hopes, I am asking you as Presider
as Nancy did as First Lady to help our efforts by coming and addressing the students
at our assembly program , the final one for the year in April or early May.
I know, Mr President, you are certainly busy and have a difficult schedule but
as I outline our accomplishments I think you will see why you as President would
enrich our efforts even more.
First, The SADD-group staged an assembly in November to get students to sign the
the SADD contracts. A chapter was set up in our school and an overwhelming number
of students signed the contract. Our keynote speaker was Robert G. Kramer, National
President of the Federation of Parents for Drug Free Youth.
The other assemlies speak for itself in the enclosed portfolio of the programs
re have set up since Nancys visit. However, the assembly on Teenage Depression and
Suicide had a tremendous effect and impact on all of use
