Ron Hubbard-author, musician, philosopher, research pioneer, educator, photographer, cinematographer, navigator, explorer and humanitarian. "To really know life, you've got to be part of life," Mr. Hubbard has said. "You must get down and look; you must get into the nooks and crannies of existence; you have to rub elbows with all kinds and types of men before you can finally establish what he is." More than any other modern philosopher, Mr. Hubbard has befriended and contributed to people of all persuasions and professions, and has himself lived a life of stirring adventure and stellar accomplishment unequaled in the world today. A recent computer print-out listing some of Mr. Hubbard's works is more than 1050 pages long, single spaced. His creative works included films, photographs, choreography, slide shows, music, etc., as well as articles and books. For his musical creations alone, he has received more than 75 awards. His weekly fan mail from friends, admirers and people he has helped through his books and philosophy averages 2400 letters-much more than that of the Queen of England and Pope John Paul combined. Mr. Hubbard's technologies are used by more than 3200 educational, business, social reform, drug abuse and other organizations, from Alaska to Zaire. Some of the subjects covered by L. Ron Hubbard's technical, philosophical, instructional and self-help works are: human behavior, morality, education, drug abuse, health, musicology, photography, cinematography, art, design, aesthetics, horticulture, management, labor, marketing, public relations, metaphysics, logic, communication, leadership, interpersonal relations, counseling, navigation, exploration, aviation, engineering, writing, economics, history, data analysis, electronics and computers. In each of these areas, Mr. Hubbard has made outstanding technical breakthroughs and pioneering discoveries acclaimed by civic leaders, professionals and citizens the world over. L. Ron Hubbard was born in Tilden, Nebraska on March 13, 1911. In 1984, acknowledging him for his 73rd birthday and his more than 50 years as a writer, Governor George Ariyoshi of Hawaii wrote, "You have lived a rich life in many fields, and in turn have enriched the lives of many thousands of others through these efforts and by the personal examples you have offered. "At one time, in reflecting on your philosophies, you said that 'wisdom is meant for anyone who wishes to reach for it. It is the servant of the commoner and king alike and should never be regarded with awe.' "Possibly wisdom itself should not be regarded with awe, but certainly the application of wisdom, compassion and knowledge, which you have practiced throughout your adult lifetime, is an awesome accomplishment." To begin to catalog the magnitude of L. Ron Hubbard's achievements and the recognition of his works-from governors, mayors, businessmen, artists, community leaders, teachers, etc.-is a mammoth task in itself. This booklet presents but a small portion of his honors and awards received over the last year alone. 4 0 shows a few of the many established centers throughout the E THE <00 "THE GUARDIAN OF THE GULCH™ OFFICIAL SYMBOL OF THE CITY OF HELENA. He discovered that not only LSD but other chemical poisons and toxins, preservatives, pesticides, etc., as well as medicinal drugs can lodge in the fatty tissues of the body for years, and that these can cause adverse mental and physical reactions. A person's behavior and even his learning rate could be affected. He developed the Purification Program, a unique detoxification program, and in the five years since its release, tens of thousands of people have completed the program with rave results. Writing in the journal of the U.S. National Safety Council, in a feature on detoxification in the workplace, noted toxicologist Dr. Max Ben cited a recent L. Ron Hubbard, Technical Bulletin, independent study by scientists on the effectiveness of the Hubbard Method. 1978 "Given the fact that more than 20 million Americans work with chemicals known to be toxic to the nervous system and other parts of the body, the potential benefits of detoxification techniques such as that developed by Hubbard are immense." While L. Ron Hubbard conceived of the Purification Program to help individuals overcome the mental and spiritual effects of drugs and other toxins and it is not intended as medical treatment, the results from this program have been so positive that doctors, toxicologists, environmentalists, etc., have enthusiastically embraced it. Again, as a research pioneer, Mr. Hubbard has made a breakthrough that will increase man's survival for years to come. Here is what one person had to say about the program: "I recently completed the Purification Program and I must say it was the best cleansing program I've ever been on. Before doing the program I had been on diets, done exercise programs and fasted in an effort to cleanse my body of the toxins and impurities. But on all these programs, the residual deposits of drugs in the body were never addressed and SO I continued to be affected by them. For instance, I'd go running and jog loose some residual effects of sodium pentothal from a previous tooth extraction and I'd feel faint for a few seconds at a time intermittently over the next few weeks. On the Purification Program my circulation improved greatly and I sweated out all residual drug deposits. The proof of this to me is how I feel now. None of the previous 'side-effects' of drugs occur any more when I exercise and am heavily active! I feel really healthy!" Ron Hubbard intensified his ongoing research into the field of study. He discovered that there were previously undisclosed barriers which could prevent a person from fully grasping a subject he was studying. He continued his research and developed full, advanced technologies in education, now used by students, teachers, universities and school systems throughout the world. The country of Zaire, for example, fully endorses the educational technology of L. Ron Hubbard, has trained many teachers and students in his procedures, and is "A civilization, to committed to implementing it in their entire educational system. Ron Hubbard's education technology is being broadly used to 1981 handle the missing basics of education. There are study programs being run from grade school level on up to a very successful program being run at university level. These programs, due to their success, are gaining wide public and business support and are being sponsored by Anglo American Mining Co. (the largest gold mining company in the world), Barclay's Bank, and Mobil Oil as well as many other concerned businesses. Due to the fact that the principles involved in Hubbard's education technology are directed toward the basic fundamentals of learning, his study and teaching methods have been applied to a very wide span of functional application; e.g., the Contra Costa, California, County Office of Emergency Services has implemented a training program utilizing the teaching methods of L. Ron Hubbard for application in the field of fire and law enforcement personnel training. OWIREDU DIRECTOR-GENERAL 31 Humanitarian Believing that it IS possible for an individual to influence others by setting a good example to those around him who affect his own survival, L. Ron Hubbard wrote a common sense guide to better living, a slender but immensely powerful booklet called The Way to Happiness. Soon after its publication in 1981, copies of the booklet were passed from hand to hand, given out by parents, children, priests, businesses, even government officials, as people began to realize that here was perhaps the first non-religious, non-political moral code. People began applying it to such "unsolvable" "You are important problems as crime and child abuse. to other people. You are listened to. You can influence others. In the once riot-torn community of Watts, in Los Angeles, California, more than 125,000 copies of the booklet were passed out by children, in connection with L. Ron Hubbard, The Way to Happiness, Celebrate the Children Month, sponsored by the Parents of Watts organization. 1981 One parent said, "This is the light I have been looking for It's just like a candle light. When my children read it, then they come in (to) the light." After a community workshop was held, demonstrating the use of the booklet in daily life, there was a marked decrease in violence in the area. Many of the residents, as well as the head of the Parents of Watts, have directly attributed this to the introduction and use of The Way to Happiness in the community. Ron Hubbard 4833 Fountain Avenue Los Angeles, California 90029 il This map shows a few of the established centers where L. Ron Hubbard's works are belping Points you may wish to include: RR and the Media RR has always been comfortable with media. Has a basic respect for their job. He takes the responsibility of the media in democratic society very seriously. White House Approach to the Media We have never viewed the media as monolithic. The Washington-based press corps can be very different from the out-of-town media. We also understand that the President must communicate to the Nation almost exclusively through the media. Unless it's a Presidential address to Congress or in the Oval Office, must rely on media to transmit what he says. Our approach has been to not rely exclusively on White House press corps. Tend to be subject much more to inside - the - beltway approach to news. Regional media - such as you represent -- are very important to us. You're closer to what's really on people's minds. The steps we've taken to work with the regional media include: Office of Media Relations (separate from Press Office) deals exclusively with needs of local media. Satellite interviews with local anchors and print reporters. White House News Service to electronically mail the same transcripts and releases available in the bins in the White House press room. We tell our people, throughout the administration, when you travel on business -- do editorial boards, do talk shows, don't be afraid of the media. We see this as a way of getting the administration's story out of Washington directly to the people. Regional briefings for local editors and broadcasters when we bring them to the White House for a day of briefings and a Q&A session with RR. General Comments (If you want to get into these subjects.) Commend CBS for public service programming on such issues as teenage alcohol and drug abuse. Is recognition of CBS's broader responsibility to the public. Comments on press relations and what changes, if any, Regan and Buchanan might make. Prepare for a question on the CBS-Westmoreland case and who you thought won. THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON Pain TO: FROM: DONNA L. BLUME Executive Assistant to Michael K. McConnell Vice President CBS Washington Dear Mike: March 1, 1985 RE: Meeting with CBS Television Affiliate Government Relations Committee; Roosevelt Room; Tuesday, March 5, 1985; 10:00 A.M. BACKGROUND When the two of us met in December we discussed the idea of providing an opportunity for you or another White House official to meet with representatives of television broadcasting. Such a meeting would establish a forum for a direct discussion with broadcasters regarding how the White House perceives the media. We agreed that such a discussion would be most beneficial. Initially, our discussion focused on the possibility of a presentation or panel discussion at the annual CBS affiliate convention. Then we determined that a good first step might be a smaller group and I suggested the CBS Television Affiliates Government Relations Committee. GOVERNMENT RELATIONS COMMITTEE The Committee is made up of representatives from each of the seven affiliate districts around the country. Its purpose is to follow legislative and regulatory issues in Washington that affect the industry in general and network affiliates specifically. Thus informed, the Committee helps to express the views of CBS affiliate stations on important issues. The CBS Washington office provides a support-staff function for the Committee. A list of the attendees (which includes several CBS Inc. representatives as well) is attached. I have included social security numbers for clearance. FOCUS OF DISCUSSION At our meeting you indicated that you felt that it would be beneficial to share with broadcasters how the media is perceived within the White House and how the White House acts based upon that perception. MICHAEL DEAVER March 1, 1985 Page 2 The subject of White House perception, indeed the Washington perception of the media, is of very great interest to CBS and to CBS affiliates. I believe it would be valuable for affiliates to hear how the White House reacts to news stories, how you time major White House actions or initiatives and how you believe the President and the Administration is treated by the media, particularly CBS. Certainly you might note the attached clipping from the February 22 Washington Post wherein George Keyworth charges that the press is "trying to tear down America." CBS and our affiliates are very concerned about such beliefs and attitudes toward the broadcast media. In addition to the obvious "news" based issues, certain other views would also be of interest. CBS expends significant effort to fulfill its role as an information source and as an entertainment source. In entertainment we also seek to inform the public. In specials such as "License to Kill" (drunk driving), "All the Kids Do It" (teenage drinking) and "Not My Kid" (effect of teenage drug use on family relationship), CBS seeks to increase public awareness and concern through entertainment programming. To the extent that there is White House awareness of these efforts I am sure your views on such programs would be most relevant and beneficial. Finally, any insight regarding the White House personnel and staff structure changes, which may relate to media and press relations, would be most interesting. ISSUE OF NOTE While this meeting has been announced as a White House briefing regarding the Administration's perceptions of the broadcast media you should be aware of the issue which is of greatest concern to our affiliates at the moment. While I do not anticipate questions being addressed to you on this subject, I do think it appropriate to provide you some background information on the effort to secure a legislation ban against television advertisements of beer and wine or mandatory counter advertisements. A fact sheet is attached. MICHAEL DEAVER March 1, 1985 Page 3 CONCLUSION Any subject which you wish to discuss will be most welcome. We see this primarily as an opportunity for our affiliate committee to hear from you. If I can be of any assistance or provide more information please do not hesitate to contact me. Deaver 3 Assistant to the President Deputy Chief of Staff The White House Washington, D. C. 20500 Dear Mike, Thanks very much for your support with my "pending" appointment. Honey and I look forward with enthusiasm to our new position. I assure you, we will give our best effort toward an honorable and productive job. Hopefully, you will have the opportunity to visit while we are in France. Please do not take this next comment incorrectly. I would appreciate, however, that my name be kept in mind if the Secretary of Transportation position becomes available. I grew up in the highway industry and, therefore, hold a close feeling for that department. I know others, such as Faith Whittlesey, have come home to serve the administration in a different position, SO if that possibility arises, I would appreciate your support. Again, thanks for your help. I look forward to an exciting future, which I hope is full of accomplishments in our relationship with France. Sincerely, Tree Joe M. Rodgers JMR/dt P.O. If you have any questions concerning my administrative skills, may I point out that I served as deputy director of Presidential Personnel for a period of 20 months, during which time I ran the day-to-day activities and was respon- sible for a staff of 40 as well as 9 interns. And John Herrington can attest to my unerring judgment in the selection of Presidential appointees, ranging from Schedule C's to PAS's.
