Dear Mike:
I was disappointed that I didn't get a glimpse of your
busy self yesterday at the Rally/Reunion. It was thought-
ful that we were given seats, but frustrating to be so
close and yet so far from the President whose twinkle
acknowledged our presence both prior to and after his
speech. He appears marvelously the same and seemed so
at home at the Capitol. Memories of other days were in
the hearts of the 20 or more ex-staff people present who
also seemed so happy to each other and marvel at how unchan
they appear. I always felt those were glorious years when
we worked together, now enhanced by memories and friendship
that evolved.
Helen Duty B. was kind to pick me up about 8:30. She is
always fun to be with. I had not seen Art Van C. and Dale
Rowley since I left the office. Brave and beautiful Bee
Smith, George Steffes and Dick Turner with their gray hair!
Rita, Lillian Hamilton, Debbie and Beth Smith and other
warm and friendly "souls." We were all pleased to see Kath
Osborne. The years and the "grind" seem not to show. I
had to assume you were in the Capitol "taking care care
of business," your responsibilities must be awesome!
Keep well and keep up. Kindest regards to Caroline. Keep
fit, "Four More Years" may not be too long!
I am O.K. Enjoy life and appreciate my good fortune.
Muriel is fine, as are Donald and Dennis. Donald is in
Mountain View, working with NASA. He comes home often.
Dennis is stationed in Yuma Arizona and is flying his
"heart out" in the Marines.

you can use a loyal subject and a fellow Californian during
the month of January, I can be available on the 3rd of January

My dear Mike:
I'm a bit embarrassed that you only hear from me when
I want a favor for, say a cousin who feels his need is
urgent and Only I can appeal to only you---a Miracle
Worker. I KNOW you are busy and I would much prefer
calling to tell you how well you are doing ans say
how proud I am of you and your family during this unusual
era of your life. Hence this letter.
I think of you often and with fond memories and I have
always enjoyed your friendship
Good for Caroline
and her work. Have your offspring grown to a stage and
an age they no longer want to be circulated on your
Christmas cards? I'm sure they are growing into and
becoming adjusted to their heady surroundings in addition
to all the natural changes of growing up.
The news from the White House continuesto be of interest
to me in a different way. I'm more aware and more con-
cerned because so many of you newsworthy people are known
to me. You always look SO well and unchanged on TV. I
often search the Kennedy Center during telivised events
for you and your family and any other recognizable face.
I view President and Mrs. R. with admiration.
There is little of note I can relate from Sacramento
The place is growing--downtown rapidly changing and

office has been refurbished--both Jackie and Mike, the
"Flower man" have urged me to come see. I think an
attempt was made to retire Mike---but like Holliday in
"Dream Girls" he sang "I ain't going so, he is
doing same as before but on a shorter day schedule.
When we get more sunshine than fog, I'll go down and
take a look-see at the changes

I think I can promise that I won't bother you "no more"

you to "BE THERE.' Hopefully I won't.

Donald is still in Bethesda, working with NASA and enjoying
it. Last year he was sent as part of a P.R. team to
Edwards Air Force Base for the night landing of the
missle and to Florida and Houston for ten days following
the latest launching.
Dennis gets pinned with his Golden Wings in Texas on
27th. Now a "certified" Jet Pilot. Will soon know
WHERE his next Marine assignment will be for the next
phase of his training. Needless to say there are times
when his choice of military training bothers me in these
unsettled times. He is happy, bright and witty. Both
had time with us here at Christmas.
Muriel is well, teaching in our schools with multiple
problems is no longer a pleasant career. Difficult to

tion, Teachers and the children--who seem to be different
and so uncaring about learning. Too many per class--a
mixture of Blacks/Whites/Mexicans and Asian refugees--
all with the common denominator of poverty and/or lack
of nurturing. Her sons are the "light of her life" and
duplicate bridge her most enjoyed recreation.
As for me--guess I'm like Ole Man River--jes
keep rolling along. Feel O.K--just "miss my MIND! I
don't see too many of the "girls", do keep in touwh with
Marian who has recently dropped about 75 pounds by diet-
ing! George Steffes and family visited us at Christmas
time. Lovely grown up youngsters, except the 13 year
old--all doing well in various colleges. Interesting
offspring.
I'm sure this is about as much time as your eye balls can
give to my trivia. My regards to any who might remember
me. Take care of you the best you can--"stay out of
the firing line." Kindest regards to Caroline and the
youngsters.
