Dear Mike:
4106
This morning's San Francisco CHRONICLE carried a
near-perfect wire photo of the President at his ranch
petting a dog.
The President looks relaxed, robust and comfortable.
But to the discriminating observer, he is clearly
troubled about something.
My first instinct was to think of arms control, the
deficit and Central America. As I scrutinized the photo,
however, the problem became apparent.
Someone has obviously eluded the Secret Service, stolen
the President's Levi's® jeans and left him with a sub-
stitute product that doesn't suit his fancy.
Please let me know what size the President wears so I
can make a modest contribution to the well-being of the
President and his administration.
Sincerely,
Wally Walter A. Haas, Jr.

Let's Discuss
I think we have found the right
guy for the campaign film, however,
I think we should keep in mind
David Lynch as a producer for
our advertising group.
To: Micheal Deaver
The white house
From: Direk Maistead
March 22, 1984
Dear Micheal:
As 1 mentioned to you a month or so ago, David Lynch, the director who 18
currently wrapping up DUNE, Universal's big movie for this fall, is very
much inlove with the idea of being of some assistance to the President
in his reelection campaign.
During the filming of DUNE, on which I did some special photography, Lynch
constantly asked if it was possible to meet the President and be of help
to him.
Lynch is a very talented young director. for his second feature, ELEPHANT
MAN, which he both wrote and directed, he was nominated for the Academy
Award.
In addtion, DUNE, which is a $40,000,000 picture which 1s sure to be be
this year"s STAR WARS, will be very hot once it is released on Labor Day.
Lynch 18 willing to do almost anything that his schedule permits. It occured
to me that he might be perfect to write and direct your main campaign film.
At present, ne is in California completeing post production of DUNE, and
he assures me he would drop everything on a moment's office to come see
you.
1 don't have his number nandy at the moment, but he is reachable either
through me, once I return to New York today, or through Dino DeLaurentis'
office in the Gulf and western building in New York.
I would love to see you guys get together. I think you would like him
a lot.
Hope this as of help.
Best,
Duch

Dear Mike,
The Reagans' trip "resonated" very positively back home.
The Democratic candidates, squabbling amongst themselves,
seemed pretty insignificant by comparison. All in all,
it looks like a great success for the President and all
concerned. I know it involved a great deal of work, but
all this and the Pope, too? Congratulations.
Sincerely,
Ger
