Dear Mr. President,
It is with much pleasure that we present to you these
four hats, as a symbol of the friendship which exists between
your great nation and Australia. This friendship was forged
in World War 11, strengthened through the ANZUS Pact, and
cemented through our common desire for peace throughout the
world and especially in Asia.
As the head, and representative of all the people of
the United States, we ask you to accept our small offering
as a token of our gratitude to your people for their support
and help. Your Secretary of Defence, the Honourable Caspar
Weinberger, when in Australia last month, spoke of your
country's commitment to the support of its allies. These
are comforting words to hear.
We hope these hats give you as much pleasure as we
had in making them for you.
With kind regards

Dear Skye:
Mr. Deaver was pleased to receive your
letter. We all wish you success when you
come to the United States for the Americas
Cup in Rhode Island.
I asked for the brochures for Ms. Nancy
Reynolds, who is a friend of Mr. Deaver who
was very interested in both the Akubra and
Drizabone. I have already passed the in-
formation on to her. When Chris and John
contact us here in the White House, I will
pass that information on, too.
Thanks for taking the time to write. It was
very nice to hear from you
and GOOD LUCK!
Sincerely,

Mr. Michael Deaver,
Deputy Chief of Staff,
The White House,
WASHINGTON,
DC.
U.S.A.
Dear Mr. Deaver,
A belated note to thank you for your kind letter several months ago. I
am pleased that you and the President, and your wives, are happy with
the Akubra hats delivered by Robert Nesen.
I should also like to take this opportunity of thanking those concerned
for the belt buckle inscribed by the President that Robert Nesen presented
to me on his return from the U.S.
My front cover photograph on Town and Country magazine has certainly led
to some exciting developments in my personal career. I will be stationed
at Rhode Island for the Americas Cup in August/September, to assist in
the promotion of authentic Australian country clothing, including the
famous Akubra hat, as well as the Drizabone coat and Moleskin trousers.
You will be interested to know of recent developments regarding Akubra,
Drizabone, Moleskins and other items of Australian country clothing. The
agencies for the USA have been granted to two friends of mine, Chris
Blundell and John Turner. (John and Chris are organising the Rhode Island
venture). They are leaving for a marketing trip next week, and will be
talking with Town and Country, The New Yorker and other leading magazines
initially, before selling the range into a limited number of select stores.
I understand that Ms Shirley Moore, of the White House staff has written
to Akubra asking for information on Drizabone.
As. Chris and John will be in New York in mid May with the full sample range,
it occurs to me that it might be useful for Ms Moore to see the products in
real life. Just in case I do not get your reaction to this idea before Chri
and John leave, I have given them your name, SO that they can call you from
New York.
Thank you for all your help. May be we shall see you in your Akubra in
Rhode Island.
Yours sincerely,
State Machd.

Dear Mr. Deaver,
Since you are on the National Productivity Advisory Committee, you will
be particularly interested in a new book just published by The Viking
Press entitled WORKING SMARTER.
This book contains 15 articles which the editors of Fortune magazine
assigned to experts in the fields of management, labor, and productivity.
Individually, each article focuses on a particular issue or case study;
combined, they are an impressive overview of how America can improve the
quality and productivity of merchandise and labor and be more competitive
with foreign industry.
With an introduction by the esteemed William S. Rukeyser, WORKING SMARTER
is a positive and forward-looking book that will provide inspiration for
many of the companies and groups which the National Productivity Advisory
Committee assists.
If you would like to order copies of WORKING SMARTER at a special discount
(commencing at 40% off the retail price of $13.95 for 5 copies) please
feel free to contact me by phone or letter.
Enjoy the enclosed complimentary copy. I'm looking forward to hearing
from you.
Sincerely,
