THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON July 16, 1981 Dear Mr. Campbell: Thanks for your thoughtfulness in sending along the reprint of Mr. Halbouty's interview for the Wall Street Journal. I appreciate it. Sincerely, MICHAEL K. DEAVER Assistant to the President Deputy Chief of Staff Mr. Thomas W. Campbell Dresser Industries, Inc. Dresser Building Elm at Akard Dallas, Texas 75201 MEMORANDUM THE WHITE HOI SL WASHINGTON July 17, 1981 TO: PETER MC COY FROM: Betty Barrett Pat Bye Elaine Crispen Barbara Hayward Carol Mc Cain Shirley Moore SUBJECT: Reagan-Bush Committee Staff Reunion As you know, there has been considerable discussions regarding the possibility of organizing a reunion of the employees of the Highland Street Reagan-Bush Committee. We had considered several locations suitable to hold the affair but felt that inasmuch as there are numerous people who worked hard on the campaign and have never had an opportunity to enjoy a social function at the White House, we would like to request that consideration be given to holding this reunion on the South Lawn at a date to be agreed upon in September. We feel that not only would this give great pleasure to the participants, but would be a tremendous public relations plug for the President (Administration), especially if you feel the President could be prevailed upon to meet the group and say a few words. THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON July 17, 1981 MEMORANDUM FOR BRIEFING PARTICIPANTS FROM: MICHAEL K. DEAVER Whe SUBJECT: NEXT STEPS IN COORDINATION OF SUMMIT PREPARATIONS/ACTIVITIES I want to express my appreciation for your willingness to experiment with the new briefing format. I believe -- and I think the President believes -- the new approach has served extremely well. The remainder of the substantive briefing materials will be distributed today. A Summit trip book will be distributed Saturday to members of the official party -- with complete schedules and related logistical details. I will be meeting this afternoon with all potentially authorized White House and Departmental background briefers -- to assure that the emphasis we agree upon in today's Presidential briefing meeting is properly conveyed. During the trip, functional responsibilities will continue to be borne by the individuals with whom they are ordinarily associated -- and I will continue to bear responsibility for overall coordination of support activities. If questions remain, or problems arise, please let me know. Thank you. SLGG Singer, Lewak, Greenbaum & Goldstein CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS DAVID KRAJANOWSKI CPA WILLIAM D. Deputy Chief of Staff and GREENBAUM C P A Assistant to the President BERNARD The White House LEWAK C P A 1600 Pennsy vania Avenue Washington, D.C. 20006 Dear Mike: I received a call from the White House yesterday, and have been asked to serve on the Presidential Commission on National Produc- tivity. I know this appointment came largely because of your support and recommendation. I consider it a great honor, and I would like you to know that I will do whatever it takes to make the President proud of this group. If I can help in any other way, perhaps to serve on more than one commission, please do not hesitate to ask. I understand you will be in Los Angeles in August, and I would certainly like to have lunch, dinner, breakfast or a drink, at your convenience. Give my regards to Greg. Thanks again - I certainly appreciate your help. Best regards, Hay Harvey A. I appreciate your interest in having one and regret that this must be a disappoint- ing reply. However, because of the great number of requests the President receives for mementoes, it is not possible to oblige them all. He believes it is unfair to select a few for preferential treatment while ex- cluding others. Your interest is appreciated, and we know you will understand. Sincerely, MICHAEL K. I certainly share your concern for international trade and its effects on our domestic economy. You can be sure that "The MFA and Protec- tionism in Textiles and Apparel" will receive close and serious attention as this Administration continues to make policy in the area of international economics. DEAVER Assistant to the President Deputy Chief of Staff Mr. Andrew C. Muse American Can Company 1 American Lane Greenwich, CT 06830 Fele 4 Wyoma Rd. Gloucester, Mass. 01890 July 22, 1981 Dear Mike: This vacation has had lots of clouds and fog--like the Israel diplomatic situation! But the bluefish came in early, the first time I have seen them. Son Peter got excited and bought a pole. In half an hour he landed five right in front of our home, one weighing 15 pounds. They fight well and are terrific broiled. Sunday our guests included a couple of former Massachusetts Nat'l Republican Committeewomen. One told me something you probably know--if not, you should. Sorry that I cannot remember the name of the Massachusetts woman who headed a group talking with Reagan at the Convention last year, trying to change his position on ERA, abortion, etc. There were about eight in the group, and he is said to have promised them that he could appoint the first woman to the Supreme Court. At any rate, she is now claiming credit for the recent appointment. Maybe you can get some mileage out of that fact. Here is a story that the President might be able to use to express our frustration with Begin and the PLO: A scorpion, crossing the desert, came to a stream of water. Not being able to swim, he searched for a means of crossing and found a frog. "Carry me on your back across this stream." "Co you think I am crazy?" asked the frog; "when we get to the other side you will sting me and I'll die." "No. I promise I won't sting you when we get across." So the frog allowed the scorpion to mount him and he began to swim across. In the middle of the stream, the scorpion stung him. "Why did you break your promise? Now we will both die!" "You forget," said the scorpion. "This is the Middle East." We cannot allow Begin to pursue his suicidal course! Please pass on the enclosed note to Shirley Moore; feel free to read it. She was trying to give me a hand about five weeks ago. Next week Friday we return to Sacramento. The following week we go down to Valencia to baptize our new twin grandchildren, Daniel and Victoria. Paula now has four under the age of 3: she goes back to work August 17 (telephone engineer) and Barrie will help her housekeeper with the care of the children. Our best to you and Caroline. Cordially, Jack Ellison 4 Wyoma Rd. Gloucester, Mass. 01890 July 22, 1981 Dear Shirley: My secretary in Sacramento had to bug Reg Wahl, but he has finally come through. Tomorrow morning I am to call the Executive Vice-President at Houghton-Mifflin in Boston. He is expecting to hear from me and will probably refer me on to an editor. At least, that is my assumption of what will happen. The good thing about dealing with an editor second is that he or she will have to report back to the V-P and therefore will give me a serious audience. Thanks for your help in making this contact. Sincerely, Jack Ellison THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON July 22, 1981 Dear Mr. Williams: Thank you for your recent message concerning the President's speech to the members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. I have made inquiries with the proper officials at the Office of Management and Budget concern- ing your previous letter. I am sure you will understand that due to the intricacies of developing a bipartisan budget proposal, their schedule has been very tight during the past few months. However, I have been assured that your message was given a close and serious review and that a response will soon be forthcoming. Should you encounter any further difficulties in this matter, please do not hesitate to let me know. With best wishes, Sincerely, MICHAEL K. I certainly share your desire to end the bloodshed which has plagued that region. Let me assure you that our policy is one of establishing a just and lasting peace in the Middle East based on principles which will be equitable towards all the involved parties. I appreciate the time you have taken to inform the President and me of your views. You can be sure that they will receive serious consideration. With best wishes, Sincerely, MICHAEL K. W., Marshall, Jr. 3104 Lovers Lane Dallas, TX 75225 THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON July 22, 1981 Dear Mr. Anderson: Thank you for your recent telegram concerning possible amendments to the Crude Oil Windfall Profits Tax Act of 1980. I have also received Mr. Kieschnick's letter concerning this same topic. Let me assure you that this Administra- tion shares your concern for America's energy future. Before any legislation affecting the oil industry is signed into law by President Reagan, it will receive a thorough review in which your comments will receive serious attention. With best wishes, Sincerely, MICHAEL K. DEAVER Assistant to the President Deputy Chief of Staff Mr. Robert O. Anderson Chairman Atlantic Richfield Company 515 South Flower Street Los Angeles, CA 90071 THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON July 22, 1981 Dear Mr. Kieschnick: Thank you for your recent message concerning possible amendments to the Crude Oil Windfall Profits Tax Act of 1980 currently pending before the United States Congress. I certainly share your concern for the health and produc- tivity of the American oil industry. Your comments concerning possible legislation is indeed helpful and you can be sure that they will receive serious consideration from this Administration. With best wishes, Sincerely, MICHAEL K. It is with great interest that I take note of your comments. Sincerely, MICHAEL K. DEAVER Assistant to the President Deputy Chief of Staff Miss Lena R. Simpler 1201 North Harrison Street Wilmington, DE 19806 THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON July 22, 1981 Dear Mr. McKinney: Thank you for your recent letter. I am deeply grateful for your support of President Reagan, as I am sure he will be when he hears of your kind comments regarding his Fourth of July Message. Unfortunately, the White House photographer informs me that there are no copies of the picture of the President which appeared in the July 5th issue of Parade available for distribution. However, I have enclosed a signed copy of the President's official photograph as you requested. With my very best wishes, Sincerely, MICHAEL K. DEAVER Assistant to the President Deputy Chief of Staff Mr. Charles M. McKinney 1125 Treeside Lane Herndon, VA 22070 THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON July 22, 1981 Dear Mr. Ellis: It was good of you to take the time to bring your views on supply-side economics to my attention. Your support of the policies of this Administration is deeply appre- ciated by everyone in the White House. I read your suggested experiment with great interest. However, I am afraid that such action as you propose will not be contemplated until after the President's Program for Economic Recovery has been passed by Congress. Thus, I can not be too optimistic for the near future. I would encourage you, however, to become active in local and state political affairs. I am sure that with your talents and ideals you could make a lasting and important contribution. There is much that each of us can do to improve the quality of life in America and I am sure that your efforts in this direction would be far from the least among many. With best wishes, Sincerely, MICHAEL K. DEAVER Assistant to the President Deputy Chief of Staff Mr. Brook B. Ellis 71 West Van Buren Chicago, IL 60605 THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON July 22, 1981 Dear Dean: Thanks for sending on the pictures of you and your family. Everyone certainly is growing up too fast. It's been fun to see and hear from so many old friends. Eric and Carole Grube and the Frank Hoaks were just here, and the Colbys and Bensons have been back, and I've heard from countless other Delta Sigs. Wes Davis wrote me when we first got back to Washington, and he is involved with some church-related effort in Seattle. Perhaps I could find an address around some- place, and if I do I'll send it on later. Everything here is busier than you even dream it could be, but exciting and rewarding. Carolyn and the kids are in California for four or five weeks and then we'll take some time back here towards the end of the summer. Say hello to all the family. Warm regards, MICHAEL K.
