THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON October 8, 1982 Dear Scott: Thank you for your recent letter. We have followed up on your request to have the Secretary of Energy in Coronado on December 1. I am happy to report to you that it is on his calendar. Perhaps in early November you should re-confirm the details of the event with the Secretary's office. Your interest in hosting a White House function is greatly appreciated. We will be in touch with you further on that subject. Thanks again for your hospitality. With Best Regards, MICHAEL K. DEAVER Deputy Chief of Staff and Assistant to the President Mr. Scott W. Anderson Senior Vice President Hotel del Coronado 1500 Orange Avenue Coronado, California 92118 THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON October 8, 1982 MEMORANDUM FOR MIKE DEAVER FROM: CRAIG L. FULLER us SUBJECT: REQUEST FOR SECRETARY OF ENERGY APPEARANCE The event discussed in the letter from Scott Anderson is on Deputy Secretary Ken Davis' schedule in case he is Acting Secretary on December 1. It is also on a recommended schedule for the new DOE Secretary, whomever that is on December 1. Hotel Coronado September 10, 1982 Mr. Michael K. Deaver Assistant To The President, Deputy Chief Of Staff Canwel 100347 THE WHITE HOUSE Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear Mr. Deaver: Just a short note to let you know how much we at the Hotel Del Coronado, enjoyed having lunch with you last Wednesday, and to let you know all of us here are ex- tremely excited about the possibility of hosting an official White House function. As I hope you gathered from the tour and our talk during lunch, no effort will be spared to ensure that any activ- ities in conjunction with the function would be the finest possible from the Hotel Del Coronado standpoint. Regardless of the final decision, we are thrilled and honored to be considered for such a prestigious event. I'd also like to follow up on our conversation with you over Lunch, about the possibility of an appearance by the Secretary of Energy, or a representative of the Secretary, for the dedication of our co-generation and photovoltaic systems on Wednesday, December 1st. The purpose of this ceremony is not only to dedicate these two innovative energy conservation systems, but also to commemorate the original electrification of the Hotel by Thomas Edison. With the installation of these two co-generation systems, the Hotel Del Coronado is returning to the role we played in the early times when our electric and steam plants supplied the entire power needs of the City of Coronado. Symbolically, the event will light a Victorian Christmas Tree here, where the first electrically lighted tree in the world was lit by Mr. Edison. 1500 Orange Avenue, Coronado, California 92118 (714) 435-6611 Hoteldel Coronado Page Two Mr. Michael K. Deaver September 10, 1982 As you may be aware, we are a National Historic Landmark, as well as being one of the nation's most notable resorts. It is our feeling that the energy conservation exhibited by our major project, holds national significance. For that reason, we feel it would merit your consideration and the consideration of the Secretary. Naturally, the Hotel Del Coronado would be more than happy to provide accommodations for the Secretary during his stay. We hope you will agree that this is an exciting and worthwhile project and we hope to hear from you in the near future with regards to our invitation. Again, thank you for taking the time to tour our Hotel and we look forward to seeing you in the near future. Larry Lawrence sends his regards. Cordially Scott W. Anderson Senior Vice President, Manager SWA:db 1500 Orange Avenue, Coronado, California 92118 (714) 435-6611 THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON October 10, 1982 Dear John: Thank you for your Mailgram of September 16th. As you know, the United States and Israel have an enduring special relationship based on moral as well as strategic interests. As the President said in his speech, "Israel exists; it has a right to demand of its defensible borders; and it has a right to demand of its neighbors that they rec- ognize those facts In the pre-1967 borders, Israel was barely 10 miles wide at its narrowest point. The bulk of Israel's inhabitants lived within artillery range of hostile Arab armies. I am not about to ask Israel to live that way again." This Administration is committed to a secure Israel, and as the President stated, this commitment is ironclad. Indeed, improving and guaranteeing Israeli security is the fundamental premise of the President's initiative. The President firmly believes that peace cannot be achieved by the formation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza, nor will peace be achieved on the basis of Israeli sovereignty or permanent control over those territories. Peace can only be achieved through open, direct and face-to-face negotiations concerning these areas. The President's initiative embodies principles for negotiations, not preconditions, nor imposed solutions. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with me. Sincerely, MICHAEL K. G THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON October 12, 1982 Dear Jack: Thank you for your note about the television show. I, too, thought it was a very good showcase for seeing another perspective of the President. I'll keep you posted as I agree it would be good to do again sometime. Many thanks. Sincerely, MICHAEL K. Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear Mike: 2 the I have waited until now to thank you for arranging President Reagan's appearance on my first show. I wanted time to assess reaction across the country. posted the it would w safell the I am pleased to report that the ratings were high and the reactions favorable. In San Francisco, for example, the show beat all the competition for viewers during early Sunday evening. The ratings were equally impressive in Los Angeles Saturday night at 10:30 and in Chicago Sunday night at 10. agine good sometime The producers called a number of stations to get their reactions. I think the President would be interested to know that even his critics were impressed with his spontaneity and sincerity. Several commented that the President "really cared." Others acknowledged grudgingly that "maybe he's human after all." since, These reactions confirm that the format is the right one for Ronald Reagan. I sincerely believe that he should occasionally respond to the questions and grievances of the American people. So I urge you to bring him back from time to time for more appearances. My reputation for challenging Presidents will give these appearances credibility. Certainly, the President has demonstrated that he can handle himself. Cordially, Jack Anderson THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON October 12, 1982 Dear Jacques: Thanks for taking the time to write to me before you left for Madrid. I, too, enjoyed our meeting at the State dinner for the President and Mrs. Marcos. I would suggest, upon your return, that you and Al Spiegel get together for a chat re- garding the Jewish communities in Europe. Al has been very effective for us. We have a most difficult schedule until after the elections. We are travelling a good deal of the time and have to try to "catch up" when we are in Washington. Sincerely, MICHAEL K. DEAVER Assistant to the President Deputy Chief of Staff Mr. Jacques Torczyner 515 Park Avenue New York, New York 10022 Califor JACQUES TORCZYNER 515 PARK AVENUE NEW YORK, NEW YORK 10022 752-0600 September Houlton 29, 1982 Mr. Michael Deaver Deputy Chief of Staff this The White House Washington, D. C. 20500 Dear Mike: It was good to see you at the dinner for President and Mrs. Marcos. I tried to get an appointment with you, but I know that you are extremely busy. I am leaving in a few hours for Madrid, where I will have meetings with those who might be the leaders of the next Spanish government. From there I am going to Israel for important meetings with my friends of the present government and also will have an opportunity of a private meeting with the Prime Minister. Upon my return the week of October 17, I would appreciate it very much if I could have a chance to visit you. We have very difficult relations with our allies in Europe and the adminis- tration has never made any efforts to get in touch with the Jewish communities which are very influential in Europe and which share the basic philosophies and policies of the present administration. I had breakfast yesterday with Lewish Lehrman and am making every effort to help him in his campaign, which, in my judgment, is much more difficult against Cuomo than it would have been against Mayor Koch. I also participated in a luncheon at which Foreign Minister Claude Cheysson met with some leaders of the Jewish Community. Hoping to hear from you at your earliest convenience, I remain, Most sincerely yours, Jacques Torczyner JT:hc Send at topical THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON October 13, 1982 Dear Paul: Here are the pictures I promised you and aren't they grand?
