Dear Mr. Deaver:
I wish to protest Secretary of the
Interior James Watt's absurd remarks
the musical act known as "The Beach
concerning his reasons for banning
Boys" from the capital Fourth of
July celebration
Mr. Watt's implications that the
Beach Boys and their fans are un-
wholesome, untraditional, anti-family,
instable, immoral and un-tmerican give
me great cause for personal resentment.
Please consider the following facts:
(over, please)
2.
(1) Vice President George Bush sent a personal
telegram to the Beach Boys on July 4,
1981 during their " Spirit of America"
concert in hong Beach, California, Con-
gratulating them for their contribution
to American sperit and patriotism
(2) The Beach Boys have publically made
statements against the use of drugs.
(3) Because the Beach Boys have been
performing for 21 years, they have
become an American tradition and their
fans span the old "goneration gap."
Since many of their fans are now over
40 years of age they often bring their
children to the concerts.
(4) I, myself, am 35 years of age and
have been a Beach Boys fan for 20
(5) years. I was so impressed by the wholesome,
family atmosphere at a Beach Boys
Concert two years ago, that my wife
and I brought our then 4-year old
daughter concert. to our next Beach Boys

We wanted to let you know we agree wholeheartedly with your decision
about the July 4th celebration in Washington. And we are in absolute
opposition to the comments made by Mr. Deaver of the White House.
And no, we aren't 89 years old -- we are in our mid-30s and enjoy
all types of music but there's an appropriate time and place for
rock and roll -- and it isn't during a patriotic Independence Day
celebration.
Keep up the good work!

Dear Mr. Deaver:
I was absolutely amazed to see you and
hear you quoted as being a backer of The Beach Boys.
That outfit, like all the others in that type of music
have driven 100,000,000 people almost insane in the past
30 years, since Elvis Presley. They are unkempt, rude,
vulgar and untalented. They are loud and that's all.
The rest of us, like my family, can't got into a nice
restaurant anymore without some of that ilk appearing.
It has been a nightmare.
It is a pity a person like Jim Watt must
use the judgment that the rest of you in Washington should
use. He is right. They attract the wrong kind of people
and they behave in a wrong manner. Jim Watt is to be,
again congratulated, he represents the millions who make
the country go and who have been pushed back by these
horrib be people.
Sincerely
Ralph Tucker

Dear Mr. Deever,
When Secretary Watt locks up all of us moral deviates who
appreciate the Beach Boys, can I have the cell next to yours. I
suppose that it's awfully hard to find someone who can converse
intelligently about hard rock and politics in the pen.
By the way, concerning our good friend Mr. Newton. I would
advise against it. His performance at the late October fund-
raiser for Pete Wilson at the Century Plaza left a great deal to
be desired. Have you considered Donny and Marie ? Possibly Gary
Crosby ?

From Staff and Wire Reports
WASHINGTON - After a scold-

hearted rebuke from her husband,
Interior Secretary James Watt did
everything Thursday to confess his
rock 'n' roll blunder except sing that
old Wayne Newton favorite, What
Kind of Fool Am I?
Two days after banning rock
bands from Fourth of July celebra-
tions on the Mall, a red-faced Watt
left the White House holding an un-
expected and none-too-subtle gift
from President Reagan.
It was a huge, golden, plaster foot
with a hole in it.
"Obviously, I didn't know any-
thing to start with," Watt told re-
porters with a sheepish grin. "Thisis
shooting yourself in the foot."
Watt backed away briskly from
his earlier indirect criticism of the

Dias huchard,
Now that I have got back to my 'regular
place of work' here in Manchester I look back wistfully
on the happy event that was the Queen's Visit to
American's West Coast and particularly for the happy
chance of bringing two like minds together!
I cannot think in all of my memories of
State visits that there has been one when two teams
have got on so well together and in addition had such a
great deal of fun throughout. I can only hope that some
happy chance could bring us all together again on another
occasion.
I would particularly like to thank you for a
marvellous bottle of Californian wine which I have
already consumed in company with a number of my friends
just last night since I could not bear to hold back from
it longer than then! I must try to find out from local
vintners whether sometime they may be able to get me a
crate of a similar vintage.
As you know I am also delighted with the framed
picture of our progression northwards charicatured in
such a deliahtfully artistic wav and also for the banknote
