PROJECT PERFECT FIT
April 20, 1984
The Honorable Michael K. Deaver
Assistant to the President
and Deputy Chief of Staff
The White House
Washington, DC 20500
Dear Mr. Deaver:
As co-sponsors of PROJECT PERFECT FIT we are pleased
to report that, at the halfway point of this year's
campaign, the response to our efforts has been
extremely positive. Through a combination of public
events and television coverage we believe we have
begun raising the public's consciousness of the
benefits of physical fitness.
The capstone event of PROJECT PERFECT FIT will occur
on May 5 on the Ellipse, when we will administer a
new fitness test to 1,000 Washington area residents.
The test has been designed by the National Fitness
Foundation so adult Americans will have a means of
comparing their personal fitness against others in
their age groups.
PROJECT PERFECT FIT needs to enlist your support in
making the May 5 event a success. Between the hours
of 9:00AM and Noon, 500 invited participants, all of
them representing groups or individuals who have lent
support to PROJECT PERFECT FIT, will be tested. A
$2.00 per person fee will be paid by PROJECT PERFECT
FIT, and through the good offices of AT&T, data
processing will be performed on the scene so each
individual will be able to see his or her results and
receive the new National Fitness Card the same day.
In the afternoon, 500 members of the general public
will be tested on a first-come, first-served basis.
We have allocated twenty (20) testing slots and five
(5) alternate slots in your name. We need to know by
April 27th whether you will be able to fill your
allocation. Please contact Terese Domanski's YMCA
office at 862-9757 as soon as possible with an
indication of the number of participants ages 18 and
over that we can expect.
Incidentally, there will be entertainment, including
music and fitness demonstrations, throughout the
morning. And each participant will be given a REAL
FIT PEOPLE teeshirt, courtesy of NBC's REAL PEOPLE,
as a thank you for his or her support.
PROJECT PERFECT FIT's event on the Ellipse will serve
as the Washington kick-off event of National Testing
Week, during which more than 500,000 Americans will
be tested across the country.
Additionally, you can inform your friends that on
April 28, at 7:00PM on Channel 4, they can learn
about the fitness test during a 30 minute special
program, TAKE THE TEST AMERICA, which stars many
superstar athletes and former Redskin coach George
Allen as they explain and take the test.
We hope you will be able to be with us on May 5,
along with a contingent of your friends who share an
interest in physical fitness. By joining forces in
this important project we can all help make ours a
healthier and more perfectly fit community.
Sincerely,
Matchew Yardry

About 100 of these will be stars of opera, jazz,

Dear Mr. Deaver:
We hope that you have noticed that according to
Ambassador Kirkpatrick, who represents the United States at the

possible that the Pacific Community, which conceptually is the
Pacific Basin counterpart of NATO, will be the greatest and most
imaginative program in the next half century?

Mrs. Kirkpatrick Says NATO
Is Greatest Postwar Success
Jeane J. Kirkpatrick, the chief
United States representative at the
United Nations, said yesterday that the
North Atlantic Treaty Organization "is
a colossal success, the greatest single
success of the post-World War II
years."
Mrs. Kirkpatrick, who spoke at a
luncheon at the Waldorf-Astoria spon-
sored by the National Committee on
American Foreign Policy, added that
disagreements within the alliance were
overshadowed by "a potential Soviet
threat to the security of Western Eu-
rope and a belief that the Atlantic al-
liance is the best available option for
protection from that threat."
Mrs. Kirkpatrick said that despite
changing economic and military fac-
tors that create occasional strains
within the alliance, "relations between
the United States and its NATO allies
today are very good and very strong."
She said that although "it is not a
perfect marriage," cooperation among
the NATO nations will survive because
cooperation is based on "more than
nostalgia."

PMS HONORABLE MICHAEL DEAVER
WHITE HOUSE DC
THIS TELEGRAM IS OUT OF DESPERATION. OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS ON
BEHALF OF A COALITION OF CHRISTIANS THAT INCLUDES SOME OF THE 1500
BLACK BISHOPS, PASTORS AND LAY MINISTERS AND A WIDE RANGE OF ALL
RACES AND DENOMINATIONS, I HAVE TRIED TO SCHEDULE A CONFERENCE IN THE
WHITE HOUSE TO INCLUDE A DROP-BY VISIT BY THE president. THIS GROUP
HAS REPRESENTED MILLIONS OF CHRISTIANS AROUND THIS COUNTRY WHO
ARDENTLY SUPPORT YOU IN YOUR PRESIDENCY.
A LETTER WAS SENT TO YOU MR PRESIDENT ALMOST A YEAR AGO, AND THEN
PRIOR TO THAT LETTERS OF INVITATION WERE SENT TO YOU, PLUS telegrams,
REQUESTING THAT YOU SUPPORT SUCH A CONFERENCE BY ACCEPTING OUR
INVITATION FOR A DROP-BY VISIT. AFTER WRITING YOU IT WAS RECOMMENDED
WE GO THROUGH MR BLACKWELL'S OFFICE. THEN AT A LATER DATE AFTER NO
RESPONSE, LETTERS WERE SENT AT INTERVALS TO CAROLYN SUNDSETH, THEN TO
FAITH WHITTELSEY, AND WE TALKED TO DEE JEPSON. ALSO I SPOKE WITH ED
MEESE WHO SAID HE WOULD CONVEY TO YOU MR president, MY REGARDS, AND
HE SAID, "THE PRESIDENT THINKS A LOT OF YOU, JOHNNY."
THE FINAL BLOW CAME WHEN I WAS REFERRED TO MR DEAVER'S OFFICE TODAY.
ONE OF HIS PERSONNEL FOR HIS PERSONAL SECRETARY ANSWERED MY CALL SHE
SAID THAT MR DEAVER WAS NOT IN. I STARTED TO EXPLAIN THE REASON FOR
MY CALL. I TOLD HER THAT WE HAD LITTLE TIME AND EXPLAINED WHY I
NEEDED TO TALK TO MR DEAVER, THAT WE HAD ENCOUNTERED DIFFICULTIES IN
TRYING TO GET A DROP-BY VISIT BY THE PRESIDENT TO AN UPCOMING
CONFERENCE OF CONCERNED CHRISTIANS TO BE HELD ON MONDAY MAY 7 1984 IN
THE OLD EXECUTIVE OFFICE BUILDING. THE YOUNG LADY SAID, AND I QUOTE,
"IF YOU DON'T THINK THAT THE PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE IS DOING ITS JOB,
PUT IT IN WRITING." WITH THAT REMARK THE TELEPHONE WAS FORCEFULLY
HUNG-UP. SO, MR PRESIDENT, I AM PUTTING IT IN WRITING AS SHE
SUGGESTED (I DO NOT BELIEVE A CALL FROM ANY CITIZEN, WHOEVER IT MIGHT
BE, SHOULD BE HANDLED IN THIS WAY).
I THEREFORE REQUEST YOU GIVE THIS YOUR PERSONAL ATTENTION. I DO NOT
HAVE TO TELL YOU THAT I HAVE BEEN YOUR LOYAL FRIEND OVER THE MANY
YEARS I HAVE KNOWN YOU. AND I HAVE BEEN A FRIEND WHO HAS A DEEP AND
ABIDING LOVE FOR YOU, AND FOR NANCY.
I AM MAKING THIS PERSONAL REQUEST MR president, THAT YOU MAKE A
DROP-BY CALL ON MONDAY BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 3 TO 5 TO GIVE
ENCOURAGEMENT TO THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MANY CHURCHES AND
CHRISTIAN ORGANIZATIONS WHO LOVE YOU AND SUPPORT YOU. JUANITA JOINS
ME IN GIVING THANKS TO OUR LORD FOR YOU AND NANCY AND YOUR INSPIRING
LEADERSHIP OF THIS GREAT NATION. WE WISH FOR YOU CONTINUED JOY AND
PEACE. WE RESPECT YOU AND WE LOVE YOU.
MIKE,
THERE SEEMED NO OTHER WAY. I HAVE ADMIRED YOUR ABILITY TO PERFORM IN
AN OUTSTANDING MANNER AT ALL LEVELS OF THE AMINISTRATION HERE AT THE
WHITE HOUSE AS WELL AS IN THE GOVERNORS OFFICE. CONTRARY TO THE
REPONSE OF THE YOUNG LADY IN YOUR OFFICE, WE HAVE HAD VERY COURTEOUS
AND OUTSTANDING COOPERATION FROM OTHER MEMBERS OF YOUR STAFF,
PARTICULARILY MR DOUG HOLLIDAY AND HIS ASSISTANT MAUREEN. PLEASE GIVE
ME A CALL MONDAY MORNING AT 942-4443, 942-2215 OR 488-4442.

Dear President Reagan:
On Wednesday, May 9, the Sacramento-El Dorado Medical Society and
Medical Auxiliary will honor your colleague and friend, William E.
Dochterman, for 25 years of dedicated service as Executive Director.
As a special gift to Bill, we are compiling a commemorative album in
which we hope to include congratulatory letters and telegrams. I
know you will want to join me in congratulating him upon reaching
this milestone in his career. I have enclosed Bill's curriculum vitae,
should you require background information.
We all appreciate Bill's friendship and leadership to organized medicine
and the community, and I know he will be pleasantly surprised on May 9
when he receives your message.
It is important that all congratulations and commendations reach the
Society office by April 30, 1984. Thank you for mailing your response
in care of Chris Stincelli, Administrative Secretary, Sacramento-El Dorado
Medical Society, 5380 Elvas Avenue, Sacramento, CA 95819.
Sincerely,

My dear Mr. Deaver:
There will be few appointments within the government of the
United States that will have the potential for impacting the
health and viability of American youth and adults as will the
appointment of an Executive Director for the President's Council
on Physical Fitness and Sports. This is a major decision and the
individual selected should have an in-depth understanding of
fitness and how it may be appropriately achieved and interpreted.
With the retirement of C. Carson Conrad, new leadership will
be needed. Such a decision will have broad ramifications and will
impact several professional organizations in America. I write on
behalf of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education,
Recreation and Dance, a professional educators' organization of
over 40,000 teachers, coaches, researchers and administrators in
our nation's schools and universities, to urge your careful con-
sideration in identifying someone to take Mr. Conrad's place and to
offer the services of our organization in the review and selection
process. We have had an outstanding record of cooperation with the
President's Council and wish to mutually benefit and compliment
this relationship.
Please know of our deep respect for Mr. Conrad and our keen
interest in providing assistance in identifying an appropriately
qualified person in this position. Thank you very much for your
consideration.
Very truly yours,
Jack E. Razor
