In that letter you inquired about the possibility of the President providing a foreword or letter for your publication America's Best Recipes. Established White House policy generally precludes the President from endorsing commercial products or enterprises, including publications such as your book. Providing a foreword or letter would create the false impression of Presidential endorsement, in contravention of this policy. There have been rare instances in which the President has provided a foreword, but the circumstances have been unique, involving a long association between the President and the subject of the book, as well as special arrangements to minimize any commercial aspects of the publication. I hope you will understand the reasons we cannot provide a Presidential foreword or letter as you requested. Thank you for your inquiry, and best of luck with America's Best Recipes. Sincerely, JohnBRohit John G. North gred Inching Naples, Florida 33940 379854 Cu Mr. Larry Speakes Office of the Presidential Press Secretary The White House Washington, D.C. Dear Mr. Speakes: America's Best Recipes is a collection of the best recipes from the numerous church cookbooks that are published each year. The book is culinary in content and does not deal with religious themes in any way. The book is intended to honor the unrecognized talents of the American family cook. These homemakers have demonstrated great artistry and ingenuity. Bringing national attention to these accomplishments is the purpose of America's Best Recipes. The President frequently honors those of his countrymen who have distinquished themselves from their peers. In sports, space, and spelling bees, the accomplishments of our ablest citizens have traditionally been validated by Presidential encouragement. A Presidential forward or letter for America's Best Recipes would be a valuable 1\ contribution to establishing public esteem for the homemaker. It would be helpful for the editor to know if the President and his staff approve in principle of the idea at this time. The specifics may wait until a complete manuscript is available. As a guide to your consideration of the idea, a draft of a forward enhancing the image of the American homemaker is enclosed. An early reaction to this request would be appreciated. If you have questions, they will be promptly answered by mail or by phone at (813) 262-0508. Sincerely yours, Sandy Moses Editor America's Best Recipes January 9,1986 DRAFT (Proposed Presidential Forward to America's Best Recipes) So many of our countrymen come to prominence because circumstances force them into the public media. Their choosen occupations lead them to public acclaim when they utilize their substantial talents. I have in mind the members of Super Bowl winning football teams, astronauts, and our military heroes. There are in our land many others whose talents are just as special. Without the spectacular backdrop of armed conflict or space adventure, their accomplishments go unheeded in the public eye. I refer to the homemakers of America whose creativity in response to the appetites of their families has been part of our national tradition. The astronaut trains for five years for a five day space flight which brings him national attention. The homemaker works for years in the kitchen with little or no public acclaim. With this book, I hope that public recognition of the talents of the homemaker will be established. I refer not just those whose are represented in this volume, but to all those whose daily dedication to our nation's family needs have 1 Draft Propsed Forward to America's Best Recipes helped this country become the power that it is. So it is that I gladly join in saluting the homemakers of America for their part in building a strong and viable America. 2
