As National Child, Jamie represents hundreds of thousands\nof men, women and children with disabilities who receive Easter Seal\nrehabilitation services. He's well-qualified for this role; a spinal\ncord injury at birth left him a quadriplegic and he began his rehabil-\nitation program at the age of 14 months with physical therapy sessions\nat the West Kentucky Easter Seal Center in Paducah. Jamie also was\nevaluated and received services at Easter Seals' Cardinal Hill Hospital\nin Lexington, and has been an enthusiastic camper during the past three\nsummers at Camp Green Shores, one of two residential camps for disabled\npeople operated by the Kentucky Easter Seal Society.\n(continued\n)\n-2-\nJamie is a third-grader this year and has never missed making the\nhonor roll since he entered public school. His mother, Denise Brazzell,\ncredits the Easter Seal pre-school training for making him ready, will-\ning and able for public school. Members of his rehabilitation team met\nwith school officials to help describe his needs, problems and goals.\n\"School officials were amazed at the support system we had,\" Denise\nsaid. \"If it had not been for that support system, Jamie would not\nhave done nearly as well in public school.\"\nJamie's biggest boost toward a strong sense of self-worth and inde-\npendence came when the family acquired an electric-powered wheelchair\nin 1982, on the recommendation of his physical therapist. The chair\nis equipped with a chin-control device which enables Jamie to move\nabout independently.\n\"What a different little boy we had then,\" Denise exclaimed. For\nthe first time in his life I had to ask him to move out of my way while\nI prepared dinner. I will never forget the grin on his face.\" \"\nThe Easter Seal center staff taught Jamie how to operate a computer\nwith the aid of a mouth stick. He has a computer, word processor and\nprinter at home which gives him writing capability. In addition, the\nequipment provides learning tapes and computer games which have accel-\nerated his development.\nJamie's father, Jim Brazzell, is a quality control technician at\nConsolidated Aluminum Company in Benton.
