Social Call on You and Mrs. Reagan by the
King and Queen of Sweden
Sunday, November 22, 1981 - 2:00-2:15 p.m.
BACKGROUND
King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Sylvia of Sweden are on a
one-week private visit to this country for the 75th anniversary
of the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce. Except for the
excursion to Washington, they will have been in New York,
visiting mostly business groups.
You have recently requested Franklin S. Forsberg to serve as
your ambassador to Sweden, and the clearance procedures both
here and in Sweden have been completed and we expect the
official announcement today. Attached are biographies of the
King and Queen.
TALKING POINTS
(The King is specifically prohibited from discussing politics.
It would be inappropriate to raise the subjects of the Soviet
submarine which ran aground in Sweden, or Sweden's defense
cooperation with the United States.)

Cap Weinberger gave me a report on his visit to your
country last month. He was impressed both by the beauty of
the countryside and the clear commitment of your people to
the defense of their freedom.

I have asked Franklin S. Forsberg to serve as my ambassador
to Sweden, and we understand that the clearance procedures have
been completed. I am sure he will serve well in your country.
--
With the large number of Swedish-Americans in this country,
I am sure you have had a busy time during this visit.

Sunday, November 22, 1981

4:30 p.m.
Guests begin to arrive the Diplomatic Reception
Room. Coats are checked.
Guests are escorted by Social Aides up Grand
Staircase to be seated in the East Room to
await the performance.
See attached list of guests who will be
seated in special seats.
4:45 p.m.
Social Aides escort Miss Beverly Sills, Mr.
Rudolf Serkin, and Miss Ida Levin from their
dressing rooms (see note below) up the elevator
to the State Floor. They proceed to the Red
Room.
4:50 p.m.
The President and Mrs. Reagan proceed from the
elevator to the State Floor and continue to the
Red Room where they join the three performers.
4:55 p.m.
Miss Beverly Sills, Mr. Rudolf Serkin, and Miss
Ida Levin proceed from the Red Room into the
Cross Hall. They are announced into the East
Room.
4:58 p.m.
The President and Mrs. Reagan proceed from the
Red Room and are announced into the East
Room, and the President escorts Mrs. Reagan
directly to her microphone. The performance
begins.
6:00 p.m.
The performance terminates. The President and
Mrs. Reagan may go up on the platform to thank
the performers and have a quick photograph, then
lead Miss Beverly Sills, Mr. Rudolf Serkin,
and Miss Ida Levin to the Cross Hall to the
doors in front of the Blue Room where there
will be a White House photo opportunity.
The President and Mrs. Reagan then proceed to
the elevator for their departure.
Miss Sills, Mr. Serkin, and Miss Ida Levin enter
the Blue Room where there will be a reception
for the other guests waiting in the East Room and
those viewing the taping in the Family Theater.
The reception will also take place in all Color
Rooms and the State Dining Room.
6:30 p.m.
Guests depart via the Grand Staircase.

NOTE
Before the performance, Mr. Serkin will utilize
the Library as his dressing room. Beverly
Sills and Ida Levin will utilize the ladies room
and Vermeil Room as their dressing rooms. A Social
Aide should be assigned to both areas to make sure
that no guests enter unexpectedly.
Guests attending the performance will utilize
the China Room and the Map Room as wash rooms.
There will be approximately 30 guests seated
in the Family Theater who will come upstairs
for the reception.

NOVEMBER 22, 1981
I hope you have enjoyed the program as much as we have,
here. This concert and those that will follow bring the
accomplished talents of master performers together with
artists of the new generation waiting to be recognized.
Together they represent the best of mind and spirit that
America has to offer. They add to our tradition of creativity
in freedom.
The grand designs of soldiers and statesmen are often
forgotten by history. More often than not a people are
remembered for the quality of their ideas and the beauty of
their art.
We, in this country, have a cultural record to be proud
of. Through private and voluntary contributions the American
people maintain more orchestras, more opera, more ballet,
more nonprofit theater, more libraries and other cultural
activities than all the rest of the world put together.
And as Nancy said earlier, art is no stranger to our
national house. Many who lived here have filled it with
civilizing beauty. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, who died on
this day 18 years ago, certainly did SO.
A month before his death, President Kennedy spoke of
his vision for American culture. "I look forward to an
America which will not be afraid of grace and beauty
which commands respect not only for its strength but for its
civilization as well."

As the White House Young Artists series demonstrates,
the arts in America are rich, diverse and growing -- a
vital, creative expression of our free society. American
artists like the ones we have seen tonight guarantee that we
will, indeed, be remembered for our civilization as well as
our strength.
