Newsmagazine.

is a Christian publication that is politically oriented and extremely sup-
portive of the President.

A few weeks ago I talked with you about the possibility of being in-
cluded when Mr. Reagan schedules press conferences of particular interest
to the religious community. Jo Ann Gasper, whom I believe is a friend of

Dear Mr. Gergen:
In the last few months, President Reagan has made a large impact on
the evangelical Christian community in the United States. His speech
before the National Religious Broadcasters convention was welcomed
by the 40 million people in the United States who are evangelical
Christians. His more recent address to the National Association of
Evangelicals convention in Orlando, Florida, reinforced among the
nation's Christians the belief that President Reagan stands for the
moral beliefs that undergird historic Christianity.
CHRISTIANITY TODAY magazine is a biweekly publication that addresses
itself to the evangelical Christian audience. It has a paid circula-
tion of approximately 180,000. Its constituency cuts across a wide
range of mainline Protestantism as well as independent Christian
churches. Evangelical Christianity is not to be confused with funda-
mentalism, about which we read so much in the daily press.
I'm writing to request an interview with President Reagan that would
be conducted by the magazine's editor, Gilbert Beers, and myself.
We wish to question the President about his views on important moral
issues currently before Congress, as well as his own moral beliefs
as expressed in the recent speeches. Recently, our magazine con-
ducted an interview with former President Carter, and I have enclosed
a copy of that issue with this letter. I don't believe our inter-
view with President Reagan would focus so closely on his personal
faith because he has not made that a public issue as much as Presi-
dent Carter has. I believe we could conduct an efficient and pro-
ductive interview in 45 minutes' time. The date of the interview,
of course, would be at the President's convenience.

As a member of the Gideons International, we were all so pleased to read your
Proclamation declaring 1983 as "The Year of the Bible." I am sure you are
aware that the proclamation was recently printed in our "Gideon" magazine.
In October of 1983, the Gideons of New York State are planning to hold our
annual state convention in the Buffalo, New York area. As part of the weekend
convention, we would like to hand out copies of your "Year of the Bible" pro-
clamation to those attending. Would it be possible to get a copy of the
original proclamation suitable for reproduction (for about 350-400 copies)
We are hoping to have the proclamation reproduced in a size and format that
people could frame and hang on their walls.
If it is not possible to provide a copy, we would then proceed to have a
reprint made from the Gideon magazine.

Dear Friend,
Randy Bennett is a convicted murderer. About eight months ago, after
many years of drug use, Randy murdered a couple in a drug related event.
For eight months 1 visited Randy, once each week, at the Potter County
Jail. A few days ago he was sentenced to 75 years in jail. On July 21st I shared
with Randy our vision for Bold Ministries and its mission of reaching and pro-
tecting our young people through one of Bold Ministries Divisions - "Kids for
Christ."
Here is what Randy said "If there had been a 'Kids for Christ' in my
neighborhood when I was growing up THE CHANCES ARE GOOD THAT
I WOULD NOT BE IN JAIL."
We need to protect our young people. Bold Ministries is planning to open
a "Kids for Christ" center at 1623 Dumas Dr. (Hwy. 287) Amarillo, Texas
79107 on September 1, 1982. We plan on reaching thousands of young people
in the Amarillo Community. In order to open this facility we need to raise
$68,000.00. This money will be used by the Lord to make a down payment on
the purchase of the building, purchase equipment, pay utilities, insurance and
staff.
What is it worth to save the life of a young person? I don't know! But I do
know that the devil's crowd spends millions every year to destroy our young
people. We can surely spend $68,000.00 to save our young people.
Please let me hear from you. Those who feel led of the Lord to support this
ministry will have their names engraved on a plaque in the entrance of the
building. We need God's people, giving God's money to support this project.
I pray that you will give and give generously.

On July 12, 1982, I will be addressing the annual conference
of the South Carolina District of The Wesleyan Church concerning
the President's proposed constitutional amendment allowing
voluntary prayer in public schools and other public institutions.
Enclosed you will find an open letter to the conference drafted
by Rep. Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. who represents my district.
Accompanying his letter is an article concerning the school
prayer issue.
Would it be possible, Mrs. Dole, for someone on the
White House staff to draft a similar letter in support of
the President's amendment which could be copied and distributed
at the annual conference next month? Or would it be possible
to obtain a letter of supprt under the signature of the
President himself?
A resolution in support of the amendment will be intro-
duced at the conference next month at the time of my pre-
sentation. It is my desire to obtain as much input as
possible from members of Congress and the Administration
in order to insure the passage of a favorable resolution.

My fear is that the only amendment reported out ot Committee
will be the silent prayer alternative-- clearly worse than
none at all. My chief objective is to keep the door open
for other alternatives which will achieve the goal we are
all striving for.
While I am perfectly content with the President's
Amendment, I do not consider it perfect or "sacred". There
is plenty of room for "fine-tuning" it to bring about the
type of reconciliation so desperately needed at this time.
This is one of those occasions where nothing would make
me happier than for events to prove me totally wrong. Sadly,
I fear that the opposite is the case.
Praying that we can achieve a crucial victory in this
important cause, I remain

- Leaders Meeting With the President -
The President has already met recently with several key
religious and conservative leaders on a wide range of issues. A
similar meeting with school prayer leaders should be arranged.
The meeting should be limited to only 8-12 people and only needs
15-20 minutes.
The press should be invited in the meeting during which: (a)
the President praises the leaders for their efforts and exhorts
them to fight harder for his Amendment during this critical time;
and (b) the leaders will in turn praise the President for his
initiative, courage and leadership on the issue and present him
with an award/plaque from Project Prayer commending his efforts.
Suggested Leaders: In addition to myself as Director of
Project Prayer, I recommend Dr. Robert Grant, Chairman of Chris-
tian Voice, Rev. Tim LaHaye and his wife, Beverly, Pat Robertson
and/or Ted Pantaleo from the Freedom Council, Jerry Falwell, Bob
Dugan of the N.A.E., et. al Perhaps the key Congressional
sponsors of the legislation should also be invited-- Rep. Tom
Kindness and Senators Thurmond and Hatch. (The Project Prayer
Coalition now has 126 members, including all of the above men-
tioned leaders).
I will contact you in a few days to discuss this idea with
you in more detail and receive your reaction. Please don't hesi-
tate to contact me in the meantime if I can be of any assistance.
